Saint Hilarion Castle, Kyrenia

4.8
#2 of 8 in Historic Sites in Kyrenia
Nestled high in the rocky mountain tops overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, the ruins of Saint Hilarion Castle feature crumbling walls, Byzantine ornaments, and 100 km (60 mi) views. Although the exact construction date is unknown, the castle and a former monastery are estimated to be about 1,000 years old. Serving as a royal home with economic units, stables, and military quarters, the site survived until the Venetian arrival in the 15th century, when it was dismantled. You'll discover dark, mysterious tunnels and preserved church elements here. Don't miss the arch overlooking the sea, which makes a great photo spot. A visit to Saint Hilarion Castle represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Kyrenia tour planner to plot your vacation.

The castle ruins in the mountains of Northern Cyprus have shaken and leave a lasting impression. The monastery, a monastery on the spot caused St. Hilarion, transformed later in the impregnable Castle to defend the island, visited the Royal seat of the Lusignans, now sadly destroyed. But this is a prime example of the medieval building fortifications, having three independent defence level. And location, and stunning views of the surrounding area are saying about inaccessibility of the Castle and its former greatness. It is a pity that the tour was not enough time to climb at the very top tier. But what we saw enough to recommend to everyone to visit this wonderful place.

Not the first time I was in this fortress! As Cyprus had not come, still want in that Fortress again. On the one hand this is an excellent fitness, because steps in this fortress did not count climbs uphill. Like that of the fortress overlooks the whole of Cyprus!

Nice, not suitable for less agile people. Slippery and irregular steps. Little information to be found at entrance and throughout route, I would have liked some more background info. Had to pay entry but restrooms were also extra costs and not clean at all. Nice little shop at base of Castle with nicknacks and snacks.

Lovely looking from road but can't take pictures from road or stop as on Turkish army base. Didn't climb up as too much for me

Where to stay in Kyrenia

Northern Cyprus' most popular tourist destination offers an assortment of accommodations. It's a good idea to remain close to the beach, as this is where most of the Kyrenia's bars, restaurants, and shops are located. Transportation is somewhat lacking and unreliable; however, a bus connects the city center with beaches in the west. For a luxury stay, choose from numerous four- and five-star hotels, several of which boast seaside locations. If you're planning a longer stay, consider renting an apartment or villa.
