Ancient Shipwreck Museum, Kyrenia
Categories: History Museums, Museums
Ancient Shipwreck Museum preserves the remains of a 4th-century BCE sea vessel and its cargo, reputedly the oldest shipwreck known to man. According to scientific estimations, the ship sailed for 80 years before it foundered. Lying 30 m (98 ft) under the sea surface, this merchant ship concealed great wealth. View 75 percent of the ship's preserved body and browse through objects such as wine amphorae from Rhodes, jars filled with perfectly preserved almonds, and various kitchen utensils. Read stories of the ship's history and see photographs of the salvage expedition that took place between 1967 and 1969. We came across this by surprise when exploring the castle. It's very interesting and the artefacts give great insight into life in those times. Very well displayed .
Located in Kyrenia Castle and very well laid out. Many artefacts from the ship on display also including part of the cargo - almonds!!!!! Good to see that Cyprus is still producing them.
