Where to stay in Famagusta

Although Famagusta was once a bustling tourist destination, the city enjoys far fewer tourists today. The hotels that remain tend to be orientated towards luxury travel, offering on-site restaurants, swimming pools, and even a private section of beach. Vacation rentals are more plentiful and often a good value, particularly if you're traveling in a large group. However, they are frequently set in residential neighborhoods. To make the most of Famagusta's nightlife, opt for a place within walking distance of Salamis Road.

  • There wasn't much to see in the castle. The most interesting thing was probably that it was the inspiration for Shakespeare's Othello.  more »

  • Othello's tower was originally built as a moated citadel in order to protect Famagusta's harbour, and was originally the main entrance to the town. When the Venetians arrived, they greatly strengthened the town's defences, incorporating the citadel into the main town walls. The tower was remodelled by the Venetian Captain Nicolo Foscareno in 1492. Above the main entrance, there is a sculpture of the winged lion of St Mark, the patron saint of Venice, along with an inscription crediting Nicoli Foscareno with the renovation. Take a moment to look at the lion sculpture before you go through the gate. The front paws are on the land, representing Venice's land power, while the rear paws are in the sea, representing her maritime empire. Below the lion, the entrance door is one of the earliest surviving wooden doors in Cyprus. The citadel's more common name, "Othello's Tower", originates from Shakespeare's "Othello". The play refers to "a port in Cyprus", and "Cyprus, the Citadel". It has also been suggested that the Moor in the service of Venice could have been named after a Governor of Cyprus, Cristoforo Moro. Shakespeare's play, however, is not contemporary with Venetian rule, having been written more than 30 years after the Ottomans arrived.
  • Excellent place to visit. There are many places inside the walled city like that.
  • Nice historic tower !
  • Othello's Tower... Yes... THE Othello... Not a lot of people know this, but Shakespeare's Othello is based on a historical figure. This is his castle. Essentially, Othello's Tower is Famagusta's Citadel, its last line of defense in case the city is overrun. It's an expansive fortification that requires an entire afternoon's attention if you want to see it properly. You'll find plenty of photo opportunities and historical factoids. My only criticism of this place is that it's been stripped of any an all furnishings, so what you're touring is basically an empty castle. Nevertheless, it well worth seeing if you're in town. Pro-Tip: The central courtyard is converted into an outdoor theater for part of the summer. Unsurprisingly enough, you can see Othello on-stags in Othello's Castle, if you get your visiting dates right. Dates change from year to year, so be sure to check out the local tourist information websites ahead of time.
