Varahicacos Ecological Reserve, Varadero

4.1
#4 of 13 in Wildlife in Varadero
Find your bearings on trails through thick, densely populated forest at Varahicacos Ecological Reserve, a nature preserve on the northeastern end of Hicacos Peninsula. A diverse and magical array of sights await you in this 3 sq km (1.15 sq mi) stretch of land. Follow sparsely signed trails to what is thought to be the oldest living thing in Cuba--the “Patriarcha” Cactus, a 500-year-old giant cactus tree. Head deeper into the reserve to find two caves: “Ambrosio,” a mesmerising, vast maze filled with fruit bats and decorated with ancient pictographs dating back 2,000 years, and “Musulmanes,” a smaller cave containing indigenous human remains that date back to 500 BC. Be sure to bring plenty of water. See Varahicacos Ecological Reserve and all Varadero has to offer by arranging your trip with our Varadero trip app .

Who enjoy exploring nature should not fail to visit this place. It is very easy, because the input to this nature reserve is practically on the main road (Las Morlas) that brings us to the end of the peninsula, where there is an exit for the hotels Paradisus Varadero and Iberostar Varadero. You can also get there using one of the buses which run between the hotels of the area and the town of Varadero (5 CUC's you can travel all day) because they stop practically at the door. The Rails, as well as the main points to admire are marked on a map which is distributed at the entrance so you can't lose. Don't forget to bring some good shoes, water, insect repellent, sunscreen, and camera. And since you're so close and equipped with the essential, enjoy the morning and visit the Cueva del Ambrose (who, I am told is an Ambrosia ...). You can catch the same bus and get off at the next stop.

I just happened upon this place. It was near the caves I visited. We passed it on the bus and I decided to get off and explore. I think it was 5 CUC's to get in and they gave me a guide to the trail. ...  more »

It is short travel... they charge 5 cuc per person. You are a sick to navigate it. With two outs, a long and another shorter. You can see caves, iguanas and geckos. Termite mounds and many trees. There are caves with a grave.

Very nice reserve especially early in the morning. You will be quite alone. Simple but effective information in Spanish, English, German and French. About the items you will find there. We regrettably missed the bats so pay attention to the man who sells you the ticket ;-)

I went to this wonderful Ecological Reserve in March 2016. To get there you can take the daily tour bus, for 5 cuc (which lasts all day) ask the bus assistance that you want to make a stop there when you get on and they will let you know when to get off. The bus stop is quite close by the entrance. When you get there you pay 5 cuc each and you receive a piece of paper with information about the place. They asked what language I spoke, so I’m assuming that they have the information in a few different languages. Has you walk through it there are signs to point which way to go, and numbers on the different parts of the reserve. The numbers correspond to what is on the piece of paper. There are a lot of cool and interesting things to see. One of the ones is number 9, the bat cave. I strongly recommend going inside and taking a look. A few suggestions if you are going there, wear shoes or even hiking boots if you have them. You are basically walking around in a forest, it’s quite rocky. It takes around 2 hours to walk around the whole place, so ensure that you go there early. Where it does get dark in there before the sunsets, and the workers at the front gate don’t stay and wait for everyone to come back out. Overall if you like nature walks and want to change it up from being on a resort, I would strongly recommend going here.

Not a big park. Nice caverns to visit.
