Valle de los Ingenios, Trinidad

3.8
#2 of 45 in Wildlife in Cuba
See where the town of Trinidad made its money during a visit to Valle de los Ingenios, a network of three interconnected valleys located 8 km (5 mi) to the east of town. During the 19th century, the valleys were home to over 50 sugar cane mills, and the ruins of the estates that built up around them can still be seen today. Some of the most impressive, preserved sites include bell towers and warehouses, slave quarters and manor houses. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988, the valley's natural landscape and slowly decaying colonial sites combine well to form atmospheric and evocative scenes. Valle de los Ingenios is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Trinidad Edition.

The Valle de los Ingenios has two key points to visit: the Manca-Iznaga wit with its wonderful Tower and the Mirador del Valle. The resourcefulness Manca-Iznaga is one of the sites of historic interest - architectural of the Valle de los Ingenios. This wit foot retains much of its facilities: the House hacienda, the Bell Tower, ship blacksmith, nursing, Hamlet and the slaves cemetery. If we accede to the hacienda, now transformed into restaurant, we can observe in the backyard a sugar mill that slaves got the juice, sugarcane juice. And it is that adjacent plots were cane growing areas. What really stands out in the mill is the lookout tower, which, with its 137 steps, guarding the slaves and plantations of the Iznaga. Climbing costs 1 CUC and worth. There are spectacular views of the entire Valley with a panoramic 360 degrees the other point is the viewpoint of the Valley of the sugar mills. The immense wealth of Trinidad was forged in these valleys due to the cultivation of sugar. The Valley still contains the ruins of numerous sugar mills of the 19th century, although most were destroyed during the os wars of independence. They still sow some sugar, but the Valley is most famous for being in the Unesco World Heritage. A beautiful viewpoint with a bar/restaurant that has recently opened a few zip lines (canopy).

To get there, you can take the little tourist train from Trinidad. I hired a taxi as I wanted to be flexible to explore the valley. Recommendable.
