Moncada Barracks, Santiago de Cuba

(3.7/5 based on 300+ reviews on the web)
Visit the site of the beginning of Cuba’s most important historical movement when you head to Moncada Barracks. The barracks was the site of Fidel Castro’s July 26th assault, which he later named his revolution. The attack led to Castro’s imprisonment. Having been converted to a school after the revolution, visitors must now visit around the schedule of classes. Take a guided tour of the barracks to learn about the attack before heading to the small museum. The artifacts in the museum are labelled with Spanish labels and descriptors. Make Moncada Barracks a centerpiece of your Santiago de Cuba vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Santiago de Cuba trip itinerary planner.

  • One of the most interesting visits of my long tour of Cuba, would never lose it. The photos and explanations are not too many or heavy. Fidel and Raúl kid are well chronicled. Now it is a school that keeps the scars of bullets.

  • Site of the failed coup of 1953 by the Castrists where you'll learn a lot about the Cuban Revolution. As usual in Cuban museums, the fee for taking pictures is ridiculously high and not worth botherin...  more »
  • The barracks now house a school in one section. The exhibition gives insight into the events of the failed attack that Castro had organised years before his final success.  more »

  • Good quality museum by Cuban standards, but don't bother if you can't read Spanish.

  • One of the most important places to visit. Looks beautiful. Intentionally left traces of bullets and shrapnel on the walls.
