  • With a breathtaking Greco-Roman facade and a major access staircase, the first museum opened in Cuba in 1899, when it was still a Spanish colony, named after his illustrious promoter, first mayor of Santiago. It stands a few blocks from the Parque Cespedes and other local attractions. In various rooms and three levels, are exhibited samples of pre-Columbian culture as well as art and Cuban history (weapons, clothing, and objects of Máximo Gómez, Antonio Maceo and José Martí). Among other weapons, a torpedo craft employed by the mambises troops at the mouth of Cauto River against Spanish ships. In the field of Ethnography, are mummies paracas of the Peru and the only Egyptian Mummy that exist on the island (dated CA. in the year 2000 BC). Fine arts, includes a collection of colonial paintings, Renaissance Spanish works donated by the Museum del Prado (Madrid) in the 19th century, and parts of Cuban artists (Lam and Portocarrero) among others of similar importance the spacious building has spacious rooms with air conditioning. Open to the public every day from 9 am hour. Closing time is different. The indications in this respect differ from each other. Foreigners must pay an entry of 2 CUC and 5 to enter with camera.
