Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca, Santiago de Cuba

Must see · World heritage site · Castle · Tourist Spot
Guarding the entrance to Santiago de Cuba Bay, Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca stands as one of the best preserved and most complete examples of Spanish-American military architecture. Built to help protect against pirate attacks, the multi-level stone fortress--now a UNESCO World Heritage Site--has a fortified gun platform, powder magazine, command building and guard post. Walk the symmetrical, ancient walls and enjoy the view from atop the fortress. Be sure to buy a permit if you wish to take photos. • Wonderfully restored and maintained. This is a good example of the theory of self defense in the era that it was built. Donald Trump is still trying the same approach with his stupid wall.
  • This is a fortress built in colonial times in the far east province of Santiago de Cuba, with an astonishing view to the ocean. It harbors a museum, restaurant and stalls where private vendors sell handicraft. A must see in Santiago de Cuba.
  • Some really nice photo ops here
  • This historic spear fort is a must see in Santiago.
  • Very nice fortress with superb views. The staff at the gate will ask tourists to pay off you take photos even with your phone camera, ☹️. Very hot in the summer, one of the hottest place in Cuba, I have been told.
