Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca
Guarding the entrance to Santiago de Cuba Bay, Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca stands as one of the best preserved and most complete examples of Spanish-American military architecture. Built to help protect against pirate attacks, the multi-level stone fortress--now a UNESCO World Heritage Site--has a fortified gun platform, powder magazine, command building and guard post. Walk the symmetrical, ancient walls and enjoy the view from atop the fortress. Be sure to buy a permit if you wish to take photos. Add Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca and other attractions to your Santiago de Cuba trip itinerary using our Santiago de Cuba day trip planner.

Wonderfully restored and maintained. This is a good example of the theory of self defense in the era that it was built. Donald Trump is still trying the same approach with his stupid wall.

This is a fortress built in colonial times in the far east province of Santiago de Cuba, with an astonishing view to the ocean. It harbors a museum, restaurant and stalls where private vendors sell handicraft. A must see in Santiago de Cuba.
