  • This is a buzzing square. The town band plays very listenable music in the central band stand at 20.00 on Sundays (and Thursdays we were informed). Small carts pulled by goats for small children walki...  more »
  • I mean, it's the usual Central Park, present in every city of Cuba, where you can rest, have a chat, get to know the locals, connect to the internet (Santa Clara is the city where I found it harder to connect because connecting often did!). It's fun in the evenings, when many locals flock here, thanks to the bars and clubs around! Needless to recommend it, it is impossible not to come over if you are in Santa Clara!

  • Santa Clara is rarely included in the itineraries or I often hear that travelers stop only the square and Mausoleum Ernesto Che Guevara. It's a shame!! From Santa Clara, located right in the Centre of the island, you can do great things! And then it's a city that preserves the authenticity we all seek on holiday ... Clean, quiet, and at the center of the island. Capital city of the province of Villa Clara. (238 000 inhabitants) Santa Clara is revealed among the most creative, cultured and transgressive cities of Cuba, will be for the presence of a major university that hosts 11000 students (including foreign 3000) and bearing the name of the woman who already since last century Lees story in this city: Marta Abreu to Estevez. Known to the world for the myth of the Commander Che Guevara that freedom in 1958 by the Batista regime with an act of selflessness and courage unmatched (storming the armored train) Santa Clara is definitely tapa obliged! It was founded in 1689 to 14 families from the town of San Juan de los Remedios, who tired of the constant looting by pirates, decided to move farther inland. The story goes that the 14 families (175 people) gathered under a big tamarind tree and decided that around that tree would be born. That famous tamarindo fluent yet the Plaza del Carmen, although over the years the town centre has shifted towards Parque Vidal, a very large square, surrounded by imposing buildings which house the beautiful library, (former Government Palace), theatre (build that will remind you of la Scala in Milan; donated to the city by its rich philanthropist Marta Abreu of Estevez) the Centro Cultural Santa Rosalia (former School of art always donated by Marta Abreu); the Art Museum (typical example of colonial architecture) and the historic Santa Clara Libre Hotel, once a symbol of luxury, now highly marked by time. Around Parque Vidal "are located on Boulevard, the main shopping streets of the city; and not far away (30 minutes walk/taxi 10) you can visit the historical site of the assault to the armored train and the mausoleum and museum dedicated to Ernesto Che Guevara. If you're in town on Sunday the market of fruits and vegetables are well worth a visit! The starting point for interesting excursions: you can visit the city of Remedios (45 km), the mountainous massive Escambray, Nicho falls, the artificial lake Hanabanilla and splendid beaches of Cayo Las Brujas and Cayo Santa Maria. (116 km) Hunting enthusiasts can contact the Los Caneyes and fishing lovers to "Grip Alacranes" .... For nightlife lovers, despite being a "provincial town" very quiet does not hesitate to surprise us with very transgressive (visit the cultural centre "El Mejunje") or exceptional presentations at "theatre" worthy of "Scale" from the rest of us ... In recent years private bars and restaurants have enriched the gastronomic choice (Florida Center, El Conuco, El Sol, La Aldaba, Jover ...) Don't forget to mark it "Santa Clara" as part of the next trip! There delluderà!

  • The Parque Vidal is the only place with proper wifi (Cuban standard) and it's a good place to see some interesting sights. The park itself is rather boring and small. The surroundings are more interesting.
  • Main square "park" of the city. It is six month that is available internet via WiFi from the top of the old Santa Clara Libre Hotel (cards in sale inside the hotel). This building, the tallest, was an Hilton before the revolution. They thought about destroy it but, on the top right, near a window, you can still see many gun shot holes made by Guevara during the assault.
  • It is a beautiful place and I worked in the white building for 16 years.
