The Presidio Modelo was a "model prison" of Panopticon design, built on Isla de Pinos (now the Isla de la Juventud) in Cuba. It is located in the suburban quarter of Chacón, Nueva Gerona.OverviewThe prison was built under the President-turned-dictator Gerardo Machado between 1926 and 1928. The five circular blocks, with cells constructed in tiers around central observation posts, were built with the capacity to house up to 2,500 prisoners in humane conditions. Most of the survivors of the rebel attacks on Moncada Barracks, including one attack leader, Fidel Castro, and his brother, Raul Castro, were imprisoned there, most from 1953 to 1955.After Fidel Castro's revolutionary triumph in 1959, Presidio Modelo remained in operation. By 1961, due to the overcrowded conditions (up to 4000 prisoners at one time), it was the site of various riots and hunger strikes, especially just before the Bay of Pigs invasion, when orders were given to line the tunnels underneath the entire prison with several tons of TNT.Prominent Cuban political prisoners such as Armando Valladares, Roberto Martín Pérez, and Pedro Luis Boitel were held there at one point or another during their respective incarcerations. It was permanently closed by the government in 1967.

  • The presidio was meant to be a the latest thing in confinement when it was finished in 1931. Instead of a model prison, it soon became infamous for unprecedented levels of corruption and cruelty. Fide...  more »
  • Not where I wanted to go from being introduced on TV, and he could finally visit. Finding the place because there was little advance information in Japan, began. Use the plane nearest nuebohelona airport is best, but access to the island besides the plane seems to be ship heading from Havana. One day one or two flies including the sudden cancellation. The airfare was about 8000 Yen round trip. Arranged from us. Go by taxi from arriving at the airport. It was 15 CUC. Ask a taxi driver after a two-hour pick-up from toured inside. Basically, feel free to visit. When I was in my other tourists who think deeply touched by the one who could, you can spot. Can be allowed in a 5 round buildings in all. Aging, steps up and rises to the upper floors. Note 10-self responsibility. There the Museum is equipped to pay. Recommended tour of the city you can in a couple of hours to see enough planes have in the morning and evening hours. This is the place for those who are interested can come from Havana in about 30 minutes, so take a look at, I would recommend.

  • Known to have had as "guests" for a few months the then young Fidel and the even younger Raul, is a prison impressive me reminded, because of barbed punctuated regularly by guard towers, a Nazi concentration camp, even without the same horrors. I would certainly recommend the presence of the guide explaining (Spanish only but more than understandable) the direction of the Museum and the five properties in imprisonment, the infirmary, the room of Fidel's imprisonment, the canteen. In short, a dip in a recent past that should not be missed on Isla
