Pharmaceutical Museum, Matanzas

Must see · Specialty Museum · Museum
Pharmaceutical Museum represents the world's only late 19th-century French apothecary, which still houses original furniture and items. Step inside to gain insight into what Cuban pharmacies offered citizens about a hundred years ago. Find original items such as bottles, utensils, books, and instruments displayed on wooden shelves that reach the ceiling. The pharmacy was built in 1882 and reopened as a museum in 1964. Its construction is a prime example of domestic Neoclassical architecture. Two floors as well as a makeshift third floor in the attic surround a central courtyard. • Best pharmacology museum in the world with the most original products intact still in the bottles or packages. It is worth visiting Matanzas for this alone. Plan a good hour or more to visit. Guides are great. Don't forget to go upstairs and look out the balcony onto the park. Great view! When you are done go see Sauto Theater, Hotel Velasco, Municipal Museum, Museo de los Bomberos, Second Plaza de Armas and its buildings, Bellamar Caves, Memorial-Museum “El Morrillo”, Museo de Arte de Matanzas, Museo Provincial (Palacio de Junco), San Severino Castle, Yumurí Valley, Cafetal La Dionisia historical plantation (look it up on Google), Cueva Saturno, Playa Corales and between 5:50 and 620PM every night in from of this museum thousands of birds arrive and sign in unison. Don't miss it. We had food and drinks at the brand new hotel next door and watched Mother Nature at her best. Nature's free concert!
  • You are welcome for a low price by a lady who knows all about the history of the museum and will provide you with many details. Amazing place well worth a visit right in the center of Matanzas.
  • In one word: Amazing! Absolutely need to visit this place if you are in Matanzas. Well preserved pharmacy with very competent staff to show you around. Beautiful tools and preserved medicaments. Must visit. We also were allowed to check out the upper level, which used to be the private rooms of the pharmacy owners. Very interesting
  • Great collection of antique pharmacy bottles, tools and supplies. Cost $3 CUC for admission. Guided tour only and tour guide only speaks Spanish.
  • Interesting Museum. Here we tried to keep everything as it was dozens of years ago. In this pharmacy French and Cuban specialists have developed a cure for cancer. The Tour guide told that the efficacy was clinically confirmed. In Addition to medicines and all sorts of containers for them, there are also devices, with the help of which preparations were made.
