Pharmaceutical Museum, Matanzas

4.8
#2 of 8 in Museums in Matanzas Province
Pharmaceutical Museum represents the world's only late 19th-century French apothecary, which still houses original furniture and items. Step inside to gain insight into what Cuban pharmacies offered citizens about a hundred years ago. Find original items such as bottles, utensils, books, and instruments displayed on wooden shelves that reach the ceiling. The pharmacy was built in 1882 and reopened as a museum in 1964. Its construction is a prime example of domestic Neoclassical architecture. Two floors as well as a makeshift third floor in the attic surround a central courtyard. • That's a shame that if few tourists go to Matanzas - because there are a few gems; and especially to be there pretty much only makes them more interesting. On the main square of Matanzas we find for example the pharmaceutical Museum, who was elected national monument. It was built in 1882 by a french - Ernesto Triolet - Pharmacy and this is a really unique pharmacy in the world. No other there is also intact - and besides it worked until 1964. There are therefore still content in jars of the 1960s - but also many tools, machines and packets of other eras. We visit the "shop" as well as the part of the production, and the upper floors a small view of the apartments of the family with a balcony overlooking the Libertad square. Admission is 3 CUC - really nothing because you also have a guided tour included in the price (and even french). You could feel very enthusiastic - probably because of the small number of visitors, which is really a shame.

  • Another interesting place. This pharmacy has a lot of well preserved items. Such as the 59 books listing all purchases and the description of the prescription. Worth a visit.  more »
  • This was our first visit to Cuba and we keep a great memory. Two adorable guides who went out of their way to be understood (as one did not speak English and we very bad Spanish). Yet the Exchange was very friendly and informative! Authorized photos not too long visit remains superb.

  • Great collection of antique pharmacy bottles, tools and supplies. Cost $3 CUC for admission. Guided tour only and tour guide only speaks Spanish.
  • Excellent Museum, this is a real treasure, has all sorts of substances, glassware, etc. Several rooms with pictures, exhibitions, piano. I thank greatly the locals to my cousin Gina, who presented a charge which we guided very kindly.

  • June 2016 very interesting and informative Museum at the Parque de la liberdad. Cedar shelves of doctor Ernesto Triolet dating back to 1882, porcelain bottles from France and old jar from Bohemia.
