Plaza de San Francisco, Havana

4.5
Dominated by the eponymous 16th-century basilica, Plaza de San Francisco is a popular meeting point near Havana's harbor. Restored in the 1990s, the square is known for its architecture, cobblestone pavement, and a 19th-century white-marble fountain with lion statues, carved by sculptor Giuseppe Gaggini. Sit back and relax at one of the cafes with a refreshing drink, admire the preserved colonial buildings, and watch the cruise ships approaching the Sierra Maestra terminal. • Stroll around and take in the history, browse the shops, grab a bite to eat, or hail a classic car for your cab. Much to see and do here. Take lots of pictures.  more »
  • A number of sculptures, fountains and one church. Sizable square where the sculpture aficionado will find a monument of urban Wanderer, bench press of Fryderyk Chopin sponsored by the Polish Embassy, a monument. Francis i konwersującą a pair of bronze. This place, where on one side you can admire the problems with unloading large cruise ships, and on the other to enter the old town. Here you can start your tour of the old town. Of course, a picture of the skid colonial star Kubanką-priceless (well, not necessarily-tip you have to give)

  • Scenic public square in front of the cruise terminal and a fantastic gateway to Old Town Havana. Grab a good coffee in the outdoor cafe for some excellent people watching.
  • Visiting Havana, Cuba was amazing. We had an excellent guide that was very informative and accommodating. We did a walking tour through old Havana, if you like coffee I recommend taking time to stop at a local cafe and having a small cup of Cuban coffee, stir with a stick of sugar cane and add a little cream. We stopped at a local perfumery and of course I had to buy a bottle. **One thing to remember and if you want to give your guide a great tip, bring small toiletries to donate (travel size shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, deodorant, toothbrushes and even toilet paper). They generally dont have these items and when they do, it isn't the best quality. There isn't a nice sandy beach in Havana, you would need to drive out about 20 minutes to Santa Maria, which is ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!
  • Fantastic, wonderful breathtaking place. You can feel the breath of past ages on your neck.
  • The restoration of the building's are awesome. So much history and beauty in this area.
  • The picturesque Plaza de San Francisco is directly across from the port. It appears more commercial in nature than the other plazas since the old customs house and former stock exchange were here. The most important building in the square though, is the Basilica Menor de San Francisco de Asis. Built from 1580-1591, it features a 42 metre high bell tower and contains the remains of influential Havana citizens. In the square you’ll likely find groups of people relaxing on the steps of the Fuente de los Leones, a fountain modeled after the famous one in the Alahambra.

Where to stay in Havana

Old Havana remains the most popular neighborhood to stay in Cuba's capital. Here you'll find all manner of accommodations, from budget guesthouses and bed and breakfasts to luxury hotels. Some of the back streets in the old town can be quite rough, so visitors with children might want to steer clear of the area. Providing a quieter, more residential alternative, the western suburb of El Vedado exudes a relaxed atmosphere and serves as the perfect spot for a family vacation. If you're after better beach access, look farther west to the upper-class district of Miramar.
