El Capitolio, Havana

4.2
#13 of 200 in Things to do in Havana
Admire the majestic El Capitolio, once home to Cuba's government. Now housing the Cuban Academy of Sciences, this building from 1929 was modeled after the Capitol Building in Washington, DC. Observe the grandiose structure, a project initiated by dictator Gerardo Machado, view the massive Doric columns that guard the entrance, and look up to see the impressive dome, inspired by the Paris Pantheon. The interior, even more intricate and rich in decorations, boasts the enormous Statue of the Republic, one of the world's largest indoor statues. • The truth that I enjoyed very much the Capitol, unfortunately could not see it on the inside that they are reshaping and up to February or March not remember well not could see one of the largest statue under cover and the real history of the same.

  • The capitol is a copy of the Washington - which seems a little ironic considering the course of history. But during its construction in 1929 it was better of course, right now it is unfortunately closed and the dome is covered with scaffolding - pity! No information on the end of the work, so well informed before you go - or then just admire the view from the outside and the crowd of old American cars on the square in front.

  • Looked absolutely stunning. It was closed for renovations when I visited but it well worth it. The dome was a saving grace whenever I found it difficult to locate my position in the streets of Old Havana. By looking up and finding the dome I knew immediately where to head to direction wise. Yes do visit, no you don't have to enter to enjoy its architectural beauty.
  • Beautiful structure, I was born in Cuba couple blocks around here, I moved when I was little and since then this building has always been in some kind of construction, they always doing something to it, I never been inside but what I would say the outside is almost an exact copy of the one in Washington DC, and the surrounding of this place are stunning too, the colorful buildings and the old fashion cars.
  • Seeing El Capitolio and the old fasion cars at the same time will make you excited 😊
  • Beautiful building but under constructure since 2014
  • Never been to Cuba but I over all love the history and the el capitolio which just looks like the u.s capital and the people in Cuba and how they have the best health care in the world , I wish the visit Cuba. 🇨🇺
