Explore Christopher Columbus Cemetery (Cemetario de Colon), a historical and architectural gem of Havana still in use today. Built in 1876 on the site of an earlier graveyard that was too small for the city's needs, this cemetery was designed by a Galician architect who sadly became the first person buried in his own creation. Roam the rows of ornate mausoleums, elaborate tombs, and family vaults, or admire the vibrant main chapel. Take a guided tour to better navigate the massive cemetery and find graves of notable Cubans, such as chess champion Jose Raul Capablanca and singer Ibrahim Ferrer. • And such ancient as the cemetery named after Christopher Columbus (Colon Cemetery) in Havana, are worth visiting. It occupies almost 60 hectares of the square and is famous for the fact that famous politicians are buried here. And among the simple graves it is worth a walk to understand that our life is only a short segment in eternity. Many of them left it very nicely and pompously. Entrance 5 cookies.

  • The cemetery is considered to be the most important in Latin America, both historically and architecturally. It was founded in 1876 years. It occupies more than 50 hectares, and there are some 2 million people buried here. It has over 500 major mausoleas. The main northern entrance is a gate adorned with biblical bas-reliefs and crowned with marble sculpture-faith, hope and love. More prominent monuments include the monument of firefighters-commemorates twenty-eight firefighters who died when in 1890 a store was ignited where pyrotechnic materials were stored. There are monuments of famous Cuban families. We will find a monument dedicated to Polish general Karol Rolof-Miałowski. A person deserved in the struggle for the independence of Cuba, or the grave of Amelia, to which the people pilgrimage-hitting the knockers are asking for graces.
