Castillo de San Carlos de la Cabana, Havana

4.4
Explore the historic Castillo de San Carlos de la Cabana, built in the 18th century to defend Havana from British colonial conquests. Now a public park, this fortress complex contains several museums, though most visitors come to climb the ramparts and take in the views of old Havana. Try not to miss the nightly cannon firing ceremony, which signals the closing of the city gates, a tradition cherished since colonial times. • This is where you can admire Havana in all her beauty! You can see all of the scars of the city that create its character from across the harbour mouth. The fort itself is very big and beautiful, fitt...  more »
  • To recommend to the greatness of the fortress built by the Spaniards and also used (relatively) recently by Che Guevara

  • Great views but not much to see apart from the small chapel. Tres morros fort is much better. But here you can attend the 9pm ceremony. 6 cuc entrance fee for foreginers.
  • A great and magnificent place to visit. From here you can get the best pictures over Havana when you take a walk up on the wall. We didn't find any place where you could actually go inside the buildings aside from the small Chapel and some stores. The best thing is to come here in the evening to watch the Canon salute they have every evening at 09:00 Pm. Be there a good time before if you want good seats.
  • It is a little bit forgotten place unfortunatelly...
  • Don't miss the cayonazo!
  • Great place

Where to stay in Havana

Old Havana remains the most popular neighborhood to stay in Cuba's capital. Here you'll find all manner of accommodations, from budget guesthouses and bed and breakfasts to luxury hotels. Some of the back streets in the old town can be quite rough, so visitors with children might want to steer clear of the area. Providing a quieter, more residential alternative, the western suburb of El Vedado exudes a relaxed atmosphere and serves as the perfect spot for a family vacation. If you're after better beach access, look farther west to the upper-class district of Miramar.
