Inspirock Rating:
4.4/5 based on 260+ reviews on the web
Nestled in the only plaza in Cuba with two churches, Iglesia de San Juan Batista's soft golden glow will attract you to its door first. Built in 1692 on the remains of a church dating back to 1570, the religious structure is considered one of the oldest in Cuba. Under constant siege in the 17th and 18th century, the building was painted white to disguise it from pirates and marauders. Its glittering gold walls were not seen again until 1944, when a millionaire Cuban philanthropist restored the site to its former glory. Step inside to find even more gold, lavished across 13 ornately decorated altars. If the front doors are closed, head round the rear of the building or attend evening mass. Use our Cayo Santa Maria vacation builder to arrange your visit to Iglesia de San Juan Batista and other attractions in Cayo Santa Maria.
