Plaza San Juan de Dios, Camaguey

(4.4/5 based on 120+ reviews on the web)
A picturesque square in the heart of old colonial Cemaguey, Plaza San Juan de Dios preserves much of its 18th century atmosphere with its abundance of cafes, craft shops, and art shops, all with red tiled roofs. The square's design dates back to 1732. It houses the city church, which was built during the 17th century. Sit back and watch as people stroll by, stop by at one of the local eateries and grab a bite, or head to a souvenir shop and buy 100% locally made souvenirs. Plaza San Juan de Dios is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Camaguey Edition.

  • A square of authentic old houses and the old hospital. There are stalls selling hand-made ceramic fridge magnets of individual houses. Very quiet but well worth a detour.  more »

  • In the historic centre of the city, you reach plaza, from the year 1728 and with rectangular shape, walking through any of the two streets that run through its most narrow sides. With the perimeter buildings in their original but well preserved State, we have the best-preserved colonial architectural complex of the city. The Church San Juan de Dios, the old hospital (now a Museum), the Toledo campaign restaurant (visit, where he is greeted each entry or exit of persons with a touch of campaign), housing large facades, large doors and windows with balconies in wood turning, constitute the outline of the square with stone floor, occupied by multiple stalls of handicrafts. In a house across from the Church, you can visit an art gallery.
