Visit Upper Town (Gornji Grad) to explore some of the capital city's most interesting restaurants, bars, and unique sites, such as the Museum of Broken Relationships. Start in the central square and walk the network of narrow streets uphill to Kaptol. Move east to Gradec and Tkalciceva, the city's most colorful pedestrian street. Relax and people-watch in one of the many bohemian cafes. Head to the museum to learn about the town's history. See sculptures, drawings, and lithographs from one of the most famous Croatian artists at Mestrovic Studio. • Gornji Grad or SIRG, as it is called, is the old city, the nucleus from which is was formed Zagreb. Formerly there were two cities in two hills, one was called Gradec (what today we call Gornji Grad or Gric), it was a free city under the direct protection of the Ban or the King, and the other was Kaptol, the Bishop city, located in the other Hill where today is the Cathedral of Zagreb. Both cities were walled and in continuous conflict and among it there was a Creek that separated them with a bridge called the bloody bridge (Krvavi most). Today the stream is no longer seen, but there is a street which is still called Krvavi most. Walls around Gradec the stone gate (Kamenita Vrata) is little, only the Lotrscak Tower and a door call. However, Gornji Grad still has the charm of a medieval town, with its palaces, churches and crooked streets. As it is at the top of the Hill, apart from climbing on foot, also you can climb using the old funicular (Uspinjaca).
