Not a lot to excite in here. Couple of lesser Breugel paintings and a pukka Teniers. Lot of 'school of' stuff and even the one work by Patinir rather questionable. Paintings could do with a good clean...  more »

When I visited the gallery for the first time in 2005 I was struck by the beauty of some works, fond as I was to Italian art and at the same time not powers help but feel a sense of vague decay and neglect. Today returning I can state that action was taken more in display quality, namely got better lights and some rooms have been restored. Dedicated to Bishop Strossmayer enlightened soul from the point of view of art that did much to Zagreb in the 19th century, with spirit almost from patron. The neo-Renaissance building, very close to other "pearls" which Artistic Pavilion and the Gallery of modern art, is an elegant building that was opened in 1884. At this time also thanks to purchases and gifts is a fairly rich Museum with works mostly paintings by European artists from the 14th to the 19th century, including several Italians such as Fra Angelico, Carpaccio and other notable Renaissance, with some foray in late Gothic period and the 14th century. In the courtyard there is the so-called Baška tablet, a 12th-century stone slab from the island of Krk, which seems to be the oldest inscription glagoliticagiunta to us. The Strossmayer Gallery of old masters is on the top floor of the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences. If you stay in Zagreb at least 5 days visit.

Very cool gallery for those interested in Renaissance and early 17th/18 century art, though it's heavy on biblical art of the 15th/16th centuries. Light on descriptions unless you speak Croatian. Good for observing the pieces, not so good for learning history etc. Located in a beautiful historical building.

Really great interior. In winter time outside square is winter wonderland.

Hostels remain the most affordable option for budget-minded travelers visiting for a day or two, providing small but neat rooms only steps away from the city's most popular bars, clubs, and restaurants.
