Take in historic architecture and art at St. Mark's Church. Notice the roof tiles, which depict a white castle on a red background--the coats of arms of the city of Zagreb. Watch for the Romanesque window and Gothic doorway that remain from the original structure. At the southern portal, admire the Gothic sculptures, which represent the twelve apostles, Joseph and Mary with baby Jesus, and St. Mark with the lion. On the northwest wall of the church, you can see the oldest coat of arms of Zagreb from 1499. In the church interior, keep an eye out for two statues by Ivan Mestrovic, considered by many to be the most famous Croatian sculptor of the 20th century. St. Mark's Church is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Zagreb Edition.

  • Tiled roof is very attractive & its main tourist feature Inside it is pretty typical old European church but with some modern sculpures
  • This 13th-century church is one of Zagreb’s most emblematic buildings. Its colourful tiled roof, constructed in 1880, has the medieval coat of arms.
  • Fairly small building but well preserved and with the surrounding area having plenty of choices for outdoors drinks in the warm evenings
  • The oldest sacral monument in Zagreb boasts its lovely colourful tiles roof that will impress every tourist who comes to the Upper Town. Interior of the church at first looks simple, but in fact is graceful and elegant, it hides masterpieces of the greatest Croatian sculptor of all time Ivan Mestrovic. The three mail altars are his sculptures made in bronze: the main altar "Crucified Christ",the side altar is Altar of St. Mary and Pieta of Jesus. Every weekend at noon, there is a change of guard of "Honorary Cravat Regiment" just in front of St. Mark's church. It honors the tradition of Croatian soldiers from 17th century.
  • A landmark one has to visit while in Zagreb, "unofficial symbol" of the city. Exceptionally beautiful mosaics roof.
  • Stunning tiled roof. Also with going inside to see the frescoes.
