St. Mark's Church, Zagreb

4.5
#2 of 17 in Historic Sites in Zagreb
Take in historic architecture and art at St. Mark's Church. Notice the roof tiles, which depict a white castle on a red background--the coats of arms of the city of Zagreb. Watch for the Romanesque window and Gothic doorway that remain from the original structure. At the southern portal, admire the Gothic sculptures, which represent the twelve apostles, Joseph and Mary with baby Jesus, and St. Mark with the lion. On the northwest wall of the church, you can see the oldest coat of arms of Zagreb from 1499. In the church interior, keep an eye out for two statues by Ivan Mestrovic, considered by many to be the most famous Croatian sculptor of the 20th century. • Visited with my girlfriend, in the photo does not do that live. Really nice. Advice from there to reach the stairs of the witches and the hidden tunnel. And after the funicular just for the sake of immersing yourself in the past.

  • St. Mark's Church (Crkva sv. Marka) is an iconic church, a landmark, with a roof of colored tiles showing coat of arms of Croatia and the city of Zagreb.
  • Nice little church to visit. So many other churches are big productions with entrance fees. This one asks for a donation of your choice. We enjoyed it.
  • Wow! Amazing church in the heart of Zagreb. Definitely worth seeing and I recommend walking around the church to see the other side of the roof as well. They have the canon which fires at noon as well.
  • Very interesting and unlike normal churches. The square surrounding it is very nice as well. It is really a cool part of town.
  • Must visit when in Zagreb. Unfortunately it was raining when we were there. What a good idea to have the arm of coat on the roof of the building.

Where to stay in Zagreb

Lodging in Croatia's capital Zagreb maintains a high standard, with many centrally located hotels offering significant weekend discounts on their finest rooms. Hostels remain the most affordable option for budget-minded travelers visiting for a day or two, providing small but neat rooms only steps away from the city's most popular bars, clubs, and restaurants. For something a bit quieter, look for self-catering apartments and guesthouses in the city's residential neighborhoods, where you can park for free and get a good night's sleep.
