Museum of Arts and Crafts, Zagreb

4.5
#8 of 22 in Museums in Zagreb
Explore Central European craftsmanship as it was throughout the 15th to 19th centuries at Museum of Arts and Crafts. The museum is part of a grand Historicist palace in the German Renaissance style that originally aimed to provide a collection of samples for master craftsmen and artists charged with the task of improving everyday items. The museum has since evolved to include the country's most advanced collection of applied art, including everything from Baroque altarpieces, furniture, ceramics, clocks, and posters. A separate room in the museum contains a number of artifacts that preserve Zagreb's pre-World War II Jewish community. Walk through using a self-guided tour with the help of translated informational signage. • A good place to see how the everyday use items changed through the history. Guided tour recommended.
  • One of my favourite museums in Zagreb. The building itself is a piece of art, with its carefully crafted interior. The exhibits in their permanent collection are quite interesting, I am particularly fond of their collection of clocks and watches, and Art Nouveau/Art Deco related exhibits. It's also a lovely concert venue, especially in the summer, when concerts are held in the museum's atrium.
  • My favourite museum in Zagreb. It's beautiful and has nice exhibitions. Needless to say the building itself is an work of art. This is a must see place.
  • Good collection of antiques but guide needed to explain significance
  • Nice restaurant for special occasions. A bit pricey, but the location, good service and great food are worth it.

Where to stay in Zagreb

Lodging in Croatia's capital Zagreb maintains a high standard, with many centrally located hotels offering significant weekend discounts on their finest rooms. Hostels remain the most affordable option for budget-minded travelers visiting for a day or two, providing small but neat rooms only steps away from the city's most popular bars, clubs, and restaurants. For something a bit quieter, look for self-catering apartments and guesthouses in the city's residential neighborhoods, where you can park for free and get a good night's sleep.
