Kula Lotrščak, Zagreb

(4.5/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
The Lotrščak Tower is a fortified tower located in Zagreb, Croatia, in an old part of town called Gradec or Gornji grad (Upper Town). The tower, which dates to the 13th century, was built to guard the southern gate of the Gradec town wall. The name is derived from Latin campana latrunculorum, meaning "thieves' bell", referring to a bell hung in the tower in 1646 to signal the closing of the town gates.CannonThe Grič cannon is one of the Zagreb landmarks. In the 19th century, a fourth floor and windows were added to the tower and a cannon was placed on the top. Since 1 January 1877, the cannon is fired from the tower on Grič to mark midday. The cannon was to give the sign for exact noon for the bell-ringers of the city's churches.

  • This tower is located close to the funicular and allows to have a very clear view of the whole city. Admission costs about € 3 per person and the staircase is narrow enough. On the ground floor, a tourist information point provides a quick guide and a map of the city for free.

  • Very nice visit, but attention to gun fired every day at noon. A lot of traffic at this time. However the climb to the top worth it for his point of view.

  • Very beautiful view of Zagreb and the Church of São Marcos. The 12:00 hours, a cannon shot echoes all over the city, recalling the historic moments of past wars. The tower itself requires greater care, but the view makes it worth all the steps raised. ...

  • One of the symbols of Zagreb. It still has an operating cannot that fires blanks every day exactly at noon (12am). The sound of the shot (blanks a re much louder so it sounds like an explosion) often scares tourists and this is used by the locals to decifer who is a turist and who is not. Also used to check the time on watches.
  • Every day at noon the canon from the tower fires a blank shot signalling it's afternoong (even has it's own facebook page that just goes "boom" in the afternoon). :) Has a really beautiful view of the city from the top.
  • A old tower watching Zagreb with the best viewpoint and historical atmosphere. Be sure to be there at midday when the canon shoots. A must see turistic spot in Zagreb. The entrance is 20 kn
  • Another vantage point to see Zagreb. The noon cannon display is really loud. Cover your ears if you are nearby.
  • great sightseeing spot. mandatory place to visit
