The Lotrščak Tower is a fortified tower located in Zagreb, Croatia, in an old part of town called Gradec or Gornji grad (Upper Town). The tower, which dates to the 13th century, was built to guard the southern gate of the Gradec town wall. The name is derived from Latin campana latrunculorum, meaning "thieves' bell", referring to a bell hung in the tower in 1646 to signal the closing of the town gates.CannonThe Grič cannon (Grički top) is one of the Zagreb landmarks. In the 19th century, a fourth floor and windows were added to the tower and a cannon was placed on the top. Since 1 January 1877, the cannon is fired from the tower on Grič to mark midday. The cannon was to give the sign for exact noon for the bell-ringers of the city's churches.

  • Very nice Cannon Blast at 12 o'clock every day. Many go there to hear it! Characteristic. Nice view from the top of the city.

  • Great little piece of history and even better views of Zagreb... You can see old town, Sljeme, Novi Zagreb etc... Basically 360 panorama. Stairs are steep with good rails so even little ones can do it. And of course you can see and if you wish even hear the cannon at noon.
  • Nicely set on top of the Upper town of Zagreb. Has a Canon that is set off at 12 noon everyday to mark the hour. Has been doing so for 140 years. Everyday.
  • Great place to visit for an awesome view of Zagreb, just don't get scared when the cannon shoots at noon.
  • Great experience and fantastic view and many information for its history, taking into consideration the reasonable entrance fee. Too many stairs though.
  • Much better view than from the more touristic observation deck + historical context. Go here for your panorama view of Zagreb.

Where to stay in Zagreb

Lodging in Croatia's capital Zagreb maintains a high standard, with many centrally located hotels offering significant weekend discounts on their finest rooms. Hostels remain the most affordable option for budget-minded travelers visiting for a day or two, providing small but neat rooms only steps away from the city's most popular bars, clubs, and restaurants. For something a bit quieter, look for self-catering apartments and guesthouses in the city's residential neighborhoods, where you can park for free and get a good night's sleep.
