Ethnographic Museum Zagreb, Zagreb
(4.3/5 based on 25+ reviews on the web)
The Ethnographic Museum is located at 14 Ivan Mažuranić Square in Zagreb, Croatia. It was founded in 1919 by Salamon Berger. It lies in the Secession building of the one-time Trades Hall of 1903, designed by the architect Vjekosav Bastl. The statues in the central part of the façade are the work of Rudolf Valdec. The frescoes on the interior part of the cupola were painted by Oton Iveković.The holdings of about 80,000 items cover the ethnographic heritage of Croatia, classified in three cultural zones: the Pannonian, Dinaric and Adriatic. Only about 2,800 items are on display. The exhibits richly illustrate the traditional way of life in Croatia, with a display of gold embroidered costumes and ceremonial dresses, music instruments, furniture, cooking utensils and tools. The reconstruction of farms and rooms gives an insight in the traditional life of farmers and fishermen. The Ljeposav Perinić collection consists of a number of dolls, dressed in traditional costumes. The museum also houses a large collection based on non-European cultures from Latin America, Central Africa, India, Melanesia, Polynesia and Australia.

  • I wasn't quite as impressed with this place as other TA reviewers have been. Pros: - easy to find - very nice staff - cheap entry fee (15 kuna) Cons: - somewhat dimly lit - many artefacts in glass con...  more »
  • This is a very nice museum keeping the feel of the old and showing you how people lived in the past. Go visit while in Zagreb and you might be surprised.
  • Is the Museum reach go Botanic Garden's West end to the West Street running trams from the Zagreb central train station turn right and on the left side of the second block. You could see the traditional costumes of Croatia. Like folk costume Museum special is.

  • Great place to understand tradition of different regions in Croatia :)
  • One very interesting and an interesting Museum. When the Museum night people come but not because it is free, but because the time available. In Zagreb, the people would go to museums but working time is the same as the Museum's opening hours visitors. After work, there's not enough time to visit the Museum.
