Cathedral of the Assumption, Zagreb

4.6
Architectural Building · Church
Cathedral of the Assumption represents the most impressive Gothic church southeast of the Alps. The cathedral is the tallest building in Croatia and dominates Kaptol Square. The twin spires are a fixture of Zagreb's skyline. Inside the church, admire the Baroque marble altars, statues, the pulpit, large-scale stained-glass work, and other objects related to religious art. Don't miss the tomb of Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac, decorated with a relief by the famous Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic. See a cycle of 13th century frescoes in the sacristy. • Symbol of the city of Zagreb. Whenever I come to Zagreb, I go to visit it. I light a candle and pray. SeIt is located on Kaptol and it is the first most important Gothic building in Croatia. The...  more »

  • Didn't go inside unfortunately but it is pretty spectacular even from the outside. A huge cathedral that has quite a presence in the middle of the city.
  • Beautiful square; in front of the cathedral. Well maintained architecture. Also impressive size. If you want to get inside of the cathedral, don’t dress too revealing. On Sunday around noon, there’s a nice little show in the square (still have no clue what that is).
  • Major landmark in a clean and friendly city. If you find yourself in Zagreb on a Sunday go hang around the old town and church for mid morning to see a lot of locals wearing traditional dress.....and no they don't mind you taking a photo, just don't get in there way and respect them as they're going to church, not dressed like that for your amusement!
  • This is one of the most beautiful churches I've ever seen, outside and inside. If you spend a day in Zagreb, you must see this.
  • Part of the cathedral is under maintenance when we visit, but we can still see the exquisite carving on the cathedral. Quite beautiful and stunning.
