Zrmanja is a river in southern Lika and northern Dalmatia, Croatia. It is 69km long and its basin covers an area of 907km2.It was known to the ancient Romans as Tedanius. The spring of Zrmanja is located in southern part of Lika under Postak - the southern peak of Pljesevica mountain, and close to south end of Velebit mountain. It is characteristic for its spring located on the bottom of very steep, almost 200 m high funnel shape rock called Misije. It flows southward through the narrow and long arable valley which encircles the southern end of Velebit through a 200-metre-deep canyon, and then turns westwards, reaches Obrovac, and after a few kilometers flows into the Adriatic sea in the bay named Novigradsko more.In the late 1980s the Riverfree Club and Huck Finn Adventure Company pioneered commercial canoe, kayak and raft trips - one-day excursions and multi-day tours with camping. In the 1990s the Velebit area was declared a nature park. Rafting trips on Zrmanja take place in spring and autumn, while kayaks and canoes are used during low water level period of July and August.

  • Two days on the river zrmanja a canoe full of thrill and scenery to take your breath away and then a second in a small village near obrovac to bathe in waterfalls

  • We booked a kayaking tour on the river Zrmanja on-site. The Organization, as well as the execution was done perfectly. The trip including a swimming break lasted about 4 h. Before embarking on the Zrmanja, there was a briefing on the history of the ride and the "danger areas". As the river carries less water in the summer, the interesting points are pretty unset. Only the highlight of the trip, a waterfall by 3.5 m which is served in a kayak, has it all. The other trip was quiet and thus you could enjoy the beautiful against in the Canyon. So from our point of view a must if you're in the area.

  • After Obrovac: Follow direction Kastel Zegarski... About the middle of the road, take small road on the left (shown as arrival point for rafting): here we come to a small bridge. a snack... a few adjustments to take advantage of the River (strings.. slide)... nice place for a picnic. We could bathe us... and rent a canoe to go to the waterfall (very easy with a small... we were with our two children, 9 and 3 years). On the way back to Zadar: Save "Pueblo VinetuPariževačpuebloka" on the GPS: it's a beautiful view of the canyon (comparable to some canyons of the American West). Stony Road (drive slowly)... but really: it's worth.

Where to stay in Zadar

If proximity to the sights in Zadar is your priority, opt to stay in the old town, a compact area packed with historical buildings. Although this area offers few budget-friendly hotel rooms, you can choose from affordable hostels within walking distance of the city's main sights. Zadar's resort hotels tend to hug the coastline, a short drive out of the city. Book ahead if you want to stay there, or stop by the city's tourist office for a list of private rooms closer to the city center.
