Church of St. Donat, Zadar

4.2
#2 of 8 in Historic Sites in Zadar
Historic Site Tourist Spot
The largest Pre-Romanesque building in Croatia, Church of St. Donat--with its strict circular shape--has been proclaimed a highly original creation of the era. Built in the 9th century, this church has pieces and parcels of an ancient Roman forum built directly into it. See the Roman pillars inside and climb the narrow, dark stairs to the second level. Observe the simple shapes, decorated with an occasional ornament from the forum to produce something that's been celebrated for over a millennium. Due to its odd attractiveness and exceptional acoustics, the site regularly hosts music festivals and performances. Where to stay in Zadar

If proximity to the sights in Zadar is your priority, opt to stay in the old town, a compact area packed with historical buildings. Although this area offers few budget-friendly hotel rooms, you can choose from affordable hostels within walking distance of the city's main sights. Zadar's resort hotels tend to hug the coastline, a short drive out of the city. Book ahead if you want to stay there, or stop by the city's tourist office for a list of private rooms closer to the city center.

  • St. Donat is special architecture. First, ground plan is different and you need to go to Istanbul or to Aachen to find similar building. Second, it is work of stone from different periods, from antiqu...  more »
  • Just like any other European country with lots of tour guides and groups looking restless. Just another have to see while your there. Nice design and looks greater at night  more »
  • We climbed the tower attached to the church for a small fee. This is a must do if you are able, the views of Zadar are brilliant. Please take a trip up the tower if you are in Zadar.  more »

  • A beautiful historic site. Simple in the interior; some call it boring but really that gives it a unique experience. No golden artifacts, no ceiling paintings nor wall arts, just a grand structure to experience how it could be in the ancient days. I quite enjoy it.
  • One of the most impressive and grandiose Romanesque churches in the region. There is a beautiful atmosphere around with some pieces from Roman times scatared around that further confirm the significant history.
  • Looks okay on the outside but there's literally nothing inside (Personally, I would advise AGAINST paying to go in!) All the displays are gone and cabinets are empty!
  • Pretty on the outside but definitely not worth the visit inside at the moment (November 2016). It's undergoing some sort of renovation on its interior.
  • Excellent old church well worth a visit. If you get chance go up the tower the views are stunning.
