Church of St. Donat, Zadar

4.1
#2 of 13 in Historic Sites in Zadar
The largest Pre-Romanesque building in Croatia, Church of St. Donat--with its strict circular shape--has been proclaimed a highly original creation of the era. Built in the 9th century, this church has pieces and parcels of an ancient Roman forum built directly into it. See the Roman pillars inside and climb the narrow, dark stairs to the second level. Observe the simple shapes, decorated with an occasional ornament from the forum to produce something that's been celebrated for over a millennium. Due to its odd attractiveness and exceptional acoustics, the site regularly hosts music festivals and performances. • A lovely building which was a great shelter from the heat of the day. Loved the archetecture on the inside - such an old building to enjoy. About 5 min walk from the Sea Organ - easy to find.  more »

  • Very relaxing historical place. There is a lot of street music and street souvenir sellers. I would highly recommend this place
  • Very relaxing. The sea organ sound is so crystal clear. Lot of street souvenirs sellers. Lot of restaurants with great foods. Worth coming for a short stay. You can finish the old town in one or two days
  • Donat looks nice from the outside and all, a bit crowded during the summer season but the view from the inside tower is amazing. You can see Zadar from above and it's really worth the ticket!
  • Of course the whole old city centre is amazing, with all of its archaeological remains and the modern square that was built around them. In the middle of all this, the Church of St Donatus stands giving a touch of magic.
  • Entry to the church building is only 20Kuna so honestly I can't complain about the price. It roughly consists of a ground and a top floor. The information provided is rather limited.
