Split Synagogue, Split

(4.3/5 based on 35+ reviews on the web)
Visit Split Synagogue, a piece of Jewish history tucked into western walls of Diocletian’s Palace within the Old Town. The Synagogue is the third oldest Sephardic Synagogue in the world. Formed in 1728, the interior includes the Aron Hakodesh, an ark and inner sanctuary which faces Jerusalem and is the most sacred place of worship. It is constructed in Classicist style utilizing black and white marble. Although no resident rabbi exists within the Synagogue, the tight-knit Jewish community continually meets for Sabbath. A conversation with a member of the community will enlighten and provide a memorable experience. Put Split Synagogue at the forefront of your travel plans using our Split vacation route planner.

  • It took us a day to find the synagogue as it is very simply marked, however, one of the members met us and told us all about its history and community. Very special visit.
  • The place is surprising in a tiny street - on the first floor; Received after a refusal, simple interior - little treasure.

  • A very small Sephardic synagogue. Jewish inhabitants come with the holidays in this simple synagogue together. One has no Rabbi, although it was one of the larger Jewish communities of Jews from the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal). On the wall are adorned with the names of the members died in the Holocaust, including several members of the Finzi family, probably came from Ferrara in Italy. They fled the Nazis and there are thought to have found a safe haven in Split. One would in the tourist brochures or guides-books this synagogue be! Hard to find. Can be visited ts 10 am and 2 pm. Not on smoking, sat, and Sunday.
