Old Split, Split
(4.6/5 based on 1,300+ reviews on the web)
Walk through the historic core of Old Split to see one of the best-preserved Roman remains in the world: the Diocletian palace. The town joined the list of World Heritage Sites in 1979. Enter the open-air central area of the palace and climb the campanile of St. Domnius cathedral. Enjoy a panoramic view of Split, nearby islands, and Marjan hill. Don't miss the chance to rub the big toe of the giant statue of Gregory of Nin, outside the palace gate, and make a wish. Other sites to see include 12th- and 13th-century Romanesque churches, medieval forts, 15th-century Gothic palaces, and Renaissance and Baroque-style palaces. • The main attraction of Split is the ancient city. Beautiful. Very charming. Nice stroll through the alleys and take advantage of local trade. The prices are expensive compared to other Croatian cities. But worth knowing.

  • I found the old centre of Split cool, and easy to walk. There's not much to do but stop by over there.
