ST MICHAEL'S FORTRESS, ŠIBENIK

St Michael's fortress was built on a steep hill 60m above sea level, overlooking the estuary of the Krka river. The medieval fortress is the hearth of a town which was mentioned for the first time in 1066. That year the Croatian king Petar Krešimir IV spent some time in Šibenik.

On the fortress you can see that it was constructed between the 13th and 18th century but most of it dates back from the 15th/16th century. According to its layout , it is an irregular square. On the eastern side of the fortress there are 2 square towers and on the northern side there are 2 polygonal towers. The main gothic entrance is on the eastern side. Inside the fortress there are 2 water tanks, which were used by the soldiers. The other necessary chambers like bedrooms, storages and similar rooms are not preserved. St Michael's church, dating back as far as the 12th century, was inside the fortress.

Archelological excavations inside the complex of St Michael's fortress revealed many prehistorical and medieval cultural remains.

In the past the fortress was destroyed and rebuilt several times. The worst damage was done in 1663 and in 1752 when the gunpowder magazine inside the walls of the fortress exploded.

Two city walls stretch from the fortress to the caost and end with a large gothic gate. They were built at the beginning of the 15th century. Their purpose was to allow the soldiers to draw back to the sea in the cases of danger.

St Michael's Fortress Revitalization Project includes the renovation of the fortress and the construction of a summer stage with 1077 seats. This makes the fortress a recognizable monument of the cultural heritage. It is accessible to the visitors and it promotes cultural tourism by organizing different cultural, musical and stage events.

  • We enjoyed taking our children aged 8 and 6 to see this fantastic, centuries old fortress. Awe inspiring views across the Adriatic to the ocean, offering a delightful sunset like no other. We climbed ...  more »
  • The view from the fortress of Sibenik and the Adriatic is a lasting impression. Too bad that was the concert season already ended.

  • 50 kunas to visit ramparts... few historic elements inside (just a small room with old walls and that's all). The only thing that's worth is the view. There is also a pair of binoculars to pay of course... Also gives access to the fort of barone further up the hills. The latter is an "augmented reality" course for the modest sum of 20 kN more. For that price, you will receive 45 minutes of absolutely despicable 3d and with a tiny view. Stay away :)
