Pula Arena, Pula

4.5
Sit on the stone tiers of Pula Arena, and imagine how gladiators fought wild animals and each other in the central area. The arena was built in the 1st century CE during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, at the same time as the Roman Colosseum. Walk the underground passages, once used by the gladiators, and see the exhibition of age-old viticulture and olive growing in Istria. Check out the reconstructions of ancient mills and presses, and amphorae used for storing olive oil and wine. The venue was also a site of knights' tournaments and fairs in the Middle Ages. Today it hosts summer performances--a film festival, an equestrian festival, operas, and concerts. Make Pula Arena a part of your Pula vacation plans using our Pula trip planner .

  • The world's sixth-largest amphitheatre but one of the best maintained. A splendid view of the sea.

  • Definitely worth seeing, especially interesting with a guide which tells something to the creation.

  • Super fun to visit. Not much there but worth going inside to harness your inner gladiator. Bring a picnic for a perfect lunch spot.  more »

  • It’s great to get to experience such a well-preserved piece of history like this. However, we were a little disappointed that some of the more interesting parts were fenced off, such as where the gladiators/animals would come out into the arena from. There was also a large stage set up in the middle for a Dizzee Rascal concert that was due to take place. I’m not sure how often the stage is set up there but it kind of lessened the experience.
  • Super touristy area. You can see everything from the outside, so you don't have to enter. There was a stage set up on the inside - no idea what it's used for, though. Live music would be pretty awesome.
  • Beautifully ancient arena used and built by the Roman empire. It has that old atmosphere hanging in the air, which is just lovely. Although if you are low on kuna's just walk around it, you don't really miss out on something except for the information on the roman empire and their ways in the cellar, if you are really desperate to make some epic photos to show to friends and family I would recommend you go inside. It's also a cool thing to mention that it's still used for things like concerts and staged gladiator fights which is pretty amazing. I totally loved my visit and don't regret a thing.
  • Very cool place! It's neat to see something from so long ago still intact.
  • Wonderfully preserved Roman arena. It's a beautiful sight to explore before sunset. I also love that it's still being used today for their annual film festival and other events throughout the year. It's an odd and amazing feeling to watch a film from the place where you know others sat to watch gladiators fight beasts and others about 2,000 years ago.

Where to stay in Pula

Although Pula offers a limited choice of mid-range hotels in and around the old town, you can still stay affordably near this part of the city by renting a room from one of the local families. Check the city's main tourist office for a list of registered owners, or look for window signs advertising rooms for rent. The most popular resort hotels remain in the well-developed areas near the sea, easily reachable from the city center by car or public bus.
