Pula Arena, Pula

Ruin Tourist Spot
Sit on the stone tiers of Pula Arena, and imagine how gladiators fought wild animals and each other in the central area. The arena was built in the 1st century CE during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, at the same time as the Roman Colosseum. Walk the underground passages, once used by the gladiators, and see the exhibition of age-old viticulture and olive growing in Istria. Check out the reconstructions of ancient mills and presses, and amphorae used for storing olive oil and wine. The venue was also a site of knights' tournaments and fairs in the Middle Ages. Today it hosts summer performances--a film festival, an equestrian festival, operas, and concerts. • Friendly place to visit in late afternoon when the world is gone, and when the Sun is less

  • Very beautiful of course, but nothing to see in it (never take entry except for a concert ticket!) because it's just a concert Amphitheater, which overlooks an industrial port and we already see everything outside. Frankly the visit is very fast as apart from 2-3 terraces to tourists the area offers almost nothing to see or visit. Big disappointment, but like everywhere in the North of the area of pula, sea to share.

  • A great Roman amphitheatre. Relaxed visit. Easy to walk round and absorb the atmosphere. Nearby shops and restaurants on the way to Augustus temple make for a great break.
  • While the Pula Arena may not be as well known as the one in Rome, this amphitheater has a lot of historic value and is just as amazing to see. One can walk all around the place unlike the one in Rome. Special exhibitions take place too. Gift shop on site. Not very handicap accessible.
  • Great example of a Roman amphitheatre… take a walk around the outside first, as the views of the inside are just as good. Save yourself some Kuna for a coffee instead 😉
  • My favourite place in Pula, a must see. The historic site has been so well preserved. Wear a hat as it gets super hot starting May. Don't forget to see the basement exhibition of historic artifacts.
  • All i can say is wow! This is the first arena I've been to so i really have no comparison but its amazing. Like stepping into another world/time. The entrance fees were very reasonable compared to other tourist destinations we've been to.

Where to stay in Pula

Although Pula offers a limited choice of mid-range hotels in and around the old town, you can still stay affordably near this part of the city by renting a room from one of the local families. Check the city's main tourist office for a list of registered owners, or look for window signs advertising rooms for rent. The most popular resort hotels remain in the well-developed areas near the sea, easily reachable from the city center by car or public bus.
