Pula Arena, Pula
(4.5/5 based on 2,600+ reviews on the web)
Sit on the stone tiers of Pula Arena, and imagine how gladiators fought wild animals and each other in the central area. The arena was built in the 1st century CE during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, at the same time as the Roman Colosseum. Walk the underground passages, once used by the gladiators, and see the exhibition of age-old viticulture and olive growing in Istria. Check out the reconstructions of ancient mills and presses, and amphorae used for storing olive oil and wine. The venue was also a site of knights' tournaments and fairs in the Middle Ages. Today it hosts summer performances--a film festival, an equestrian festival, operas, and concerts. • Although we had been told in Pula there is virtually nowhere to be seen, we decided to go in the area of the ancient Amphitheater. We were speechless. It is one of the best preserved Roman monuments, with its arcades, the inside in good condition and a suggestive panoramic view that is lost in the Adriatic Sea. The Arena Amphitheatre is still used for shows and concerts. Don't miss it, it's also a great photo object. If you are by car, with a little patience, you can find free parking in the surrounding streets.

  • Very impressive roman arena near Pula's waterfront, about 50kn to visit when I was there so on the more pricey side but certainly the standout attraction in Pula. Very impressive place. Must see if in...  more »
  • The Arena in Pula is very nice place to visit, especially if you are interested in Roman history, specially architecture...

  • Loved it. Such an amazing structure and very well preserved. I went during the day and in the evening just to walk around the site and marvel at its beauty. There is something mesmerising about looking through the ancient amphitheatre to the large 20th century industrial cranes in the dock behind. Definitely worth a visit.
  • Very nice! But as always, keep your expectations low! I got there waiting a very awesome thing... and it's awesome but not very..
  • Beautiful roman amphiteathre. Maybe not the biggest, but the best preserved one in the world. If you are in Pula don't miss it and if there is some event going on inside try and participate. It is really worth it.
  • Amazing place to visit. The View is accessible from the walk way that surrounds the arena and its free. If you want to seep more of the arena you can pay to enter. Either way it's an amazing experience.
  • Nice Amphitheatre, visited it for the Ironman Pula 70.3, where it is the finish line. Really awesome feeling to run into the arena. But as a tourist I'm not sure it would be worth the entrance fee, but anyway, if you are there it's a must see nonetheless :)
