Amphitheatre de Pula, Pula

4.5
Sit on the stone tiers of Amphitheatre de Pula, and imagine how gladiators fought wild animals and each other in the central area. The arena was built in the 1st century CE during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, at the same time as the Roman Colosseum. Walk the underground passages, once used by the gladiators, and see the exhibition of age-old viticulture and olive growing in Istria. Check out the reconstructions of ancient mills and presses, and amphorae used for storing olive oil and wine. The venue was also a site of knights' tournaments and fairs in the Middle Ages. Today it hosts summer performances--a film festival, an equestrian festival, operas, and concerts. Make Amphitheatre de Pula a part of your Pula vacation plans using our Pula trip planner .

  • Smaller than the colosseum in Rome but much cheaper to enter and much more access to the whole thing. Don't forget to visit the underground tunnels as well.  more »
  • A great example of well preserved Roman history. Interesting history of the importance of the region to the Roman Empire.  more »
  • In General, the pool is a beautiful city, but the amphitheatre is doing most, probably by their sizes. Is the sixth largest such in the world. For people with disabilities parking space at the entrance, as well as tickets for half the price if you have ID cards of people with disabilities.

  • This is underrated. Actually the sixth largest remaining Roman ampitheatre. It is largely still intact and you can go underground on a self guided tour where you can see how Rome obtained some of it's wealth. They have gladiator reenactments at certain times of the year but look online to see when if you are interested in that. I made the mistake of just going without researching ahead.
  • Honestly, I was really looking forward to seeing this arena as I've enjoyed the ones on Rome and Verona, but it was quite disappointing, especially for the cost of it. There are no interior features, in fact, save the money and just view it from the outside. Also, be aware, parking near the site is 3 Euro an hour.
  • On the plus side: beautifully preserved, monumental, historical, when we were there (end of April at a weekend) the line wasn't too long, entry fee is reasonable. On the minus side: maybe I've been spoiled by other museums and similar sites, but to me simply having a site that you can marvel at and a small exhibition about something extremely remotely connected to the place itself (how oil was produced in ancient times) in 2018 is not enough. I would expect an interactive, educational experience. Granted we didn't take the audio guide, that might have made things more interesting. Currently it's more like: 'Yeah, we have this great monument in the city, let's make sure it's in good shape and charge folks wanting to check it out.' But not a lot of extra effort is put in it.
  • A well preserved Roman amphitheatre (arena). The best part is that you get all the great views for free as you walk around it, or even from one of the cafes around (above) it, while you sip an espresso or enjoy an ice cream.
  • Beautifully preserved its a must do in Pula. There is free parking on some of the streets above the arena if you want to look for it. Coffee shops look down on the arena if you need a snack. Visible from everywhere, it is one of the Roman structures that the people of Pula just live around. Amazing.
