Jama - Grotta Baredine, Porec

4.6
#3 of 25 in Parks in Istria
Cave Nature / Park
Take a guided tour of Jama - Grotta Baredine, an underground cave filled with sculptures, lakes, and odd little creatures called "human fish," found only in this part of the world. Due to millennia of complete darkness and seclusion, this cave has developed a world of its own--the temperature inside is constantly around 14 C (57 F), the walls are moist, and the ornaments otherworldly. The "human fish" are actually aquatic salamanders that are white to pinkish in color and blind. Walk the 300 m (1,000 ft) long pathway, visit five chambers, and hear facts about the cave. Make Jama - Grotta Baredine part of your personalized Porec itinerary using our Porec vacation builder.

  • This is a great way to spend an afternoon. The tours are guided, you can't go on your own. We arrived just before a tour left so we didn't have to wait more than 10 minutes before we went down, had we...  more »

  • The cave was great, lots to see and still just 40min. Also check out the gift shop to the side of the restaurant. They make wonderful postcards with a photo of you and the guy running the booth is a very good photographer.
  • Very good overall experience, a lot of services (big parking, a lot of shadow, restaurant, souvenir shop, geological park, tractor museum, cave...). Great for whole families or just random visitors, very open and friendly staff.
  • Really nice cave. Our guide (she) was awesome.
  • Lovely little cave experience - you go down a small winding cave to a pool about 200m below the surface. Good cafe on site with plenty of seating. Guide very knowledgeable and funny. Not expensive. Over 200 steps (which you go down and have to come back up), so not for those with mobility issues or who are physically challenged.
  • Excellent place, must visit place if you are in this region and you love nature.

Where to stay in Porec

Porec serves as one of Croatia's most visited seaside destinations, so advance booking is essential for all travelers visiting at peak season. The city's inventory of lodgings includes everything from five-star hotels with sea views and all the modern amenities you need, to simply furnished rooms in rural houses a short drive outside the city. If you want to stay anywhere near the city center, expect steep prices and few bargains. For a budget-friendly alternative, look for small hotels and self-catering apartments outside the central district.
