Knin Fortress, Knin

Knin Fortress is located near the biggest mountain in Croatia Dinara and near the source of the river Krka. It is the second largest fortress in europe and most significant defensive stronghold, and a historical town in the Šibenik-Knin County in the Dalmatian hinterland. The construction of the fortress started as early as 9th century, while the current state was brought up in 17th and 18th centuries. It reached its peak during the reign of Demetrius Zvonimir, King of Croatia from 1076, as it served as a political center of the Croatian Kingdom under him.Location and descriptionIt is situated on the main transport corridor leading from Dalmatia to continental Croatia and Bosnia. The Knin Fortress lies on top of the steep Spas mountain, just 100 meters (328 ft) above the Croatian town of Knin, whose historical location was formed quite early at the foothills of the same mountain. Archaeological excavations date that this area was populated since the 6th century. It is 470m long, and 110 meters (361 ft) wide, elevated at 345m above the sea. The original look of the building, because of the lack of its material, isn't completely known. According to other similar fortifications from that time, it is assumed that it was surrounded by high walls, while the construction was accommodated to the terrain; it is environmentally secured by steep slopes on some places. The fortress comprises three parts: northern, middle and southern. Each part of the fortress is protected by loopholes and gun holes, and is connected to other parts by the city gates and drawbridges. The formation of the northern section, according to recent research, happened from the middle of the 8th century to the end of the 11th century.

  • This is a large fortress with several of the buildings in very good condition and the upper section with little restoration. It is not a challenging site so, although not wheelchair accessible, It can...  more »
  • You should have visited the second largest fortress of Europe, if it is in the region. You fits perfectly on the mountain and there is so much to discover. Many good looks in the region and tunnels, angle and building. We have parked in the large parking lot on the sports ground near the car wash station. From there it went to walk via steep stairs up to the fortress. There is no parking there more. Don't forget to pay the entrance fee of 30 Kuna per person right of the entrance. There are also toilets near the entrance.

  • To visit for its very large beautiful peculiarity. Home and rate okay visit + _1h... Dog! Point of view thanks to the Turkish architect... However the War Museum! Sucks... Quickly done wrong (in the Croatian very tired) no information on the fort no plan, explication.animation brief the tour leader is incompetent! A statue of the first Croatian president is at the top was really the icing on the cake! Political ridicule does not kill damage.

  • The place is a very nice fortress. It looks old and nicely preserved, but still it looks a bit empty. The entrance is free. There is non of the explanation for too much things. That should be fixed. You have very nice views from the top. Maybe it is nice to come there when is sunset and stay in restaurant until is dark to see how sity lights looks from there. You should try some local beer from there its very good. The prices of that restaurant could be considered as a little high for average local Croatian, but for foreign people I find it aceptable.
  • One of the largest fortress in Croatia. Nicely refurbished.
  • Very interesting and expansive. I should have gotten a map and brochure or something. Take water as the only place to buy is at the entrance and this place is BIG. Lots of history but you don't get it walking around. Guy selling tickets gave a good over-view. I will be going back
  • Amazing and historical fortress dating back to the Byzantine empire. Even Napoleon of France once visited this great fortress. A must see for all travelers going to Croatia.
  • Fabulous fortress, located in a perfectly chosen location overlooking the Krka river and the surrounding valley. History can be practically experienced on every step of the tour throughout the fortress fortification walls and towers. You can even forge your coins, try u out different crown models etc. The fortress features a fine restaurant as well, offering very good price for money. Pancakes with marmelade (as well as many other dessert options) complete the flavour of this place. Attractive in the evening as during the daylight, when view of the surrounding mountains and river is highlight.
