Dvigrad, Kanfanar

4.5
Dvigrad, is an abandoned medieval town in central Istria, Croatia. It is located in the Draga valley. The history of the settlement is prehistoric; it remained inhabited until the 18th century.HistoryThe region was settled by the Illyrians in prehistoric times. In 1345, Dvigrad was sacked by the Genoese admiral Paganin Doria during conflicts between Genoa and Venice. The Venetians sacked the town in 1383, but did not take rule of it until 1413, when a nobleman from Koper was put in governance. In the 16th century, plague and malaria depopulated much of the town. In the year 1615 it was besieged again, by Uskoks, and while it escaped capture it was abandoned save for a few poor residents within 15 years. Only three families remained by 1650. In 1714, the last residents left the town to ruin.Present dayThe Regional Programme for Cultural and Natural Heritage in South East Europe is attempting to preserve and reconstruct the town.

  • Because of the weather God has made us a spanner in the beach, we decided to visit the ruined city of Dvigrad. The way was worth it. You can see clearly the remains of individual houses, the Castle, the market square, the shops and particularly well, that of the Church. Wonderfully received also the way to the city wall. Unfortunately, very many people on the well-preserved remains of the wall are on the way, so I resolve more and more stones. Why you have to climb on historical remains? Will it be not for posterity? Now, I don't mean that it should be forbidden to take a picture once on a flight of stairs or under a stone arch. But must be climbed on the walls or on the towers? Like, I would be willing to pay an entrance fee for the conservation of this jewel, but security personnel should be placed. Footwear should be also a must for the explorers and a camera with great lens if you dien ruin complex from the distance you want to shoot. Deduction there is a point unfortunately, that one can find no info panels or, like town might have looked even sketches. For this reason, I am for an entrance fee!

  • Really neat ruins to explore almost all to yourself. Recommend going later in the afternoon and the setting sun's light makes it look really cool.
  • The place is huge. You can climb many structures and the front walls for a great view.
  • Amazing place that's off the grid! An ancient huge ruin forgotten thru time! The Moncastell cafe next to this magical place really is a gem of a find from the freshly made tasty pancakes to the old medieval wine still being made the old way! The prices and value of what you get is 4stars! But the heart of the whole place which makes it come alive is Mr Branko and his lovely wife! True honest to goodness real people that we were blessed to have met and will make your day!
  • Due to frequent epidemics of malaria and plague, the Dvigrad was abandoned. The church in Kanfanar, nearby village, still keeps the pulpit from St. Sophia Church in Dvigrad, with a relief depicting St. Sophia two towns in her hand. The remains of Dvigrad were attractive to popular actor Jackie Chan who shot there attractive action scenes for movie “God’s Armor”. Explore and testify to the fall of the one-time important Istrian town.
  • Our family had such a great afternoon at this ruin. The boys loved it. It was an adventure for all. Try the pancakes at the little restaurant, they are sooo delish!
