Spanish Fortress, Hvar

Lookout · Historic Site
Spanish Fortress features an impressive collection of amphorae and other objects from ancient times and the Middle Ages. From the town square, walk north, passing the main city gate. Climb the stairs of the medieval city walls to the fortress. Perched on a hill, it offers a panoramic view of Old Town and Pakleni Islands. Built at the beginning of the 16th century, the fortress was restored after the explosion of the powder chamber in 1579. The French added some reinforcements during their rule. Austrians built the barracks and observation post. Using our custom trip planner, Hvar attractions like Spanish Fortress can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • A bit of an uphill walk for a people with walking problems, but it wasn't a big deal for us. Still, there are many benches on the way if you need a rest. The actual fortress isn't huge but worth...  more »
  • Quite a climb in the summer hear, great views from the citadel but also on the way up too. At 7 Euro admission with no concessions it was overpriced for such a small site.  more »
  • Great walk and nice view, we had a guide who was really kind and telling us lots of history about Hvar too. A shame about all the weird people at the top faking spontaneous pictures for their...  more »
  • Would recommend. Its not big, but surely it is interesting. There is also underneath it a path that you can walk and see various species of plants. Although this road leads to the walls and the doors, these are locked, so be careful not to make a wrong turn, there are sings drawn on pavement. Up in the fortress there is a cafe and a small prison wich was really cool to see. Grab your self a combo ticket for a theatre wich is located in the city, which really pays off.
  • We havent visited inside the fortress but just the view outside was enough to be impressed. Really easy to get to by car, and you have few benches to rest and admire the great view. You can see whole Hvar and the adjacent islands. Best spot in whole Hvar city in my opinion
  • Excellent view from the fortress on the city and Pakleni islands. Prepare for half an hour up the hill walk from the city. Museum is built around the fortress and entrance is paid. There is bar in the fortress, but no restaurant.
  • Genuine fortress with high walls, lookouts, cannons and dungeon. Real old but taken care of and provides a great view of the city. Hot as hell since there is no shade except in the dungeons which are fairly cool in contrast. Remarkable how small the cells in dungeons are. You would want to avoid getting jailed in those times. Small museum on site. Displayed several items from the sea floor which went down with some galleons and merchant ships hundreds of years ago. Something to visit.
  • Great fortress, amazing views. Some really cool history. Worth a visit!
