On the square directly in front of the main entrance to the Church of Saint Blaise stands quite unusual monument called in tourist guidebooks Orlando Column is column of Orlando. According to one version, the Orlando is none other than some legendary medieval knight Roland. This brave husband near the island of Lokurm defeated the fleet of the Saracen Pirates (different version-972 a.d. aborigines gave "the thrush Venetians and although both legends, according to historians, are merely legends, they did provide some explanation for this facility). And in 1419 year grateful city residents have decided to established a commemorative column about this event. The authorship of the sculptural composition attributed to local master Dubrovcanin and Italian sculptor Antun Bonino di Milano. The column is located in the historical centre of Dubrovnik and it is quite naturally-behind the proud Knight rises sacral building that bears the name of the patron saint of the city. Monitorja the topic in njete, I encountered another version of conditioning the monument-supposedly this sculpture is a symbol of independence Raguzanskoj (Dubrovnik) Republic. This is why the existence of for nearly four centuries on top of columns of St. Blaise flag with the inscription "liberty" (infa pochjorpnuta in njete). Also on top of columns arranged a special dais (for public reading of important messages). Mentioned Orlando-Roland is also considered a patron of trade dubrovnikovchan (elbow length right hand sculptures, in which compressed vostryj mechik is 51.2 centimeters and serves as a city measure length).

One of the landmarks of Dubrovnik - Orlando's Column or Pillar is a stone column with the figure of Roland/Orlando, legendary Charlemagne's knight bearing a sword and shield, carved into the column. It was sculpted by Bonino di Milano and domestic master Antun Dubrovčanin in 1419 in Gothic style. The statue is a symbol of the freedom of Dubrovnik and the flag of the Republic always flied upon this column during ceremonies, while government proclamations and announcements were read from the column's pedestal. The column pragmatically served different purposes as the forearm of Orlando was the standard measure of the Ragusan cubit shown more accurately by a line in the base of the column ("lakat", 1 Ragusan "lakat"/cubit/elbow = 51,2 cm). Today, a ceremony before the Orlando and the raising of the "Libertas" flag on the column marks the opening of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival every year. Restoration being in progress, so "Libertas" flag, in recent years, is raised on the nearby wooden temporary column.

Where to stay in Dubrovnik

One of Croatia's major tourist destinations, Dubrovnik remains one of the most expensive cities in the country, especially if you wish to stay in the old town at peak season. You can choose from upscale hotel rooms just east of the old town, but for budget-friendly beds you may have to go as far as the outskirts of town. Many locals rent small rooms in their private homes, so look for rental signs in windows or check with the city's tourist office.
