Onophrian Fountain, Dubrovnik

3.6
#12 of 36 in Sightseeing in Dubrovnik
Landmark Tourist Spot
Although heavily damaged in a 1667 earthquake, the formerly lavish Onophrian Fountain was modeled by a famous artist from Naples, Onofrio della Cava. Built in 1438, the fountain featured complex ornaments and 16 streams, which you can see today as they flow from the mouths of images along the fountain. Stop by and see why the locals have a special bond with this fountain. You can quench your thirst here, as the water is potable. Where to stay in Dubrovnik

One of Croatia's major tourist destinations, Dubrovnik remains one of the most expensive cities in the country, especially if you wish to stay in the old town at peak season. You can choose from upscale hotel rooms just east of the old town, but for budget-friendly beds you may have to go as far as the outskirts of town. Many locals rent small rooms in their private homes, so look for rental signs in windows or check with the city's tourist office.

  • The fountain is just inside the city walls and on a hot day a drink from the ice cold water pouring from its nozzles is most refreshing especially if you have just descended from the city walls.  more »
  • Onophrian Fountain was destroyed in 1990's war, and has been carefully restored by UNESCO. The water is very safe to collect and to drink, and is one of several city fountains though out the Balkans.  more »
