Mljet, Dubrovnik

4.3
#2 of 9 in Nature in Dubrovnik
Island National Park
Mljet, Croatia's greenest island, features Mediterranean vegetation, crystal clear water, a gentle shoreline, and abundant marine life. Take a dip in one of the two salted lakes--the favorite swimming spots of locals and visitors. Visit the old Benedictine monastery on the small island. Don't miss sampling the locally made wine, olives, and goat cheese. Head to on the northern part of the island to explore the dense Mediterranean forest of one of Croatia's national parks. A car ferry and a faster catamaran ferry will take you to Dubrovnik and Peljesac Peninsula. With our custom trip planner, Dubrovnik attractions like Mljet can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Mljet is very different from the other islands, the protected Park makes impossible tourist facilities, making it a magical place. The ideal is to take shelter inside of the Park (Soline for example, beautiful Hamlet at the edge of the channel). The edges of the salt lakes are equal almost almost all, just try to get away from the small area at the junction of the two lakes (there are a few people sometimes). To do:-go swim from the edge of the Lake to the island of Sainte Marie (at only 20 m!). You can keep an eye on your business for the island but honestly we stayed 3 hours to visit the ruins of the monastery on the island a bit and our business were still there on our return. Croatia is rather safe base, so on an island like this... - rent a car (a 'mini brum' convertible for $ 45 day: attention at this price no air conditioning, personally it has suffered a bit after lunch...) Put 10 euros more to have one) and go swim in the cave of the Odyssey (or Ulysses)! There where Ulysses would have retained by the nymph Calypso! 30 minute walk to get there but it's really worth! Don't go too around noon, you will suffer from heat (no shade except inside the cave). We have made the ascent at 3 pm from the cave, really difficult... - go to be carried away by the current level of the bridge which is the junction between the great Lake and the canal. The current is sometimes loud and so fun to make you take (I said that current is not at all dangerous, you get just take at the level of the junction but 10 m more far there is more current and you can reach the coast without problem).

Where to stay in Dubrovnik

One of Croatia's major tourist destinations, Dubrovnik remains one of the most expensive cities in the country, especially if you wish to stay in the old town at peak season. You can choose from upscale hotel rooms just east of the old town, but for budget-friendly beds you may have to go as far as the outskirts of town. Many locals rent small rooms in their private homes, so look for rental signs in windows or check with the city's tourist office.
