Island of Lokrum, Dubrovnik

(4.5/5 based on 4,200+ reviews on the web)
Swim, marvel at exotic plants, and walk with peacocks at Island of Lokrum. Visit the site where, according to legend, King Richard the Lionheart was cast safely ashore after a shipwreck during his return from the crusades. The area was also once a favorite summer retreat of Austrian archduke Maximilian. To get to the island, ride a ferry from the city. Enjoy a dip in the small salt lake, which is 10 m (33ft) deep and known as the Dead Sea. Visit the botanical garden to admire Mediterranean plants, including laurels, oaks, pines, cypresses, olives, agaves, cacti, magnolia, and palms. If you'd like to take a journey back in time, explore the deserted 11th-century Benedictine monastery. To visit Island of Lokrum on your trip to Dubrovnik, use our Dubrovnik itinerary maker.

  • To avoid the large mass of tourist take the 10 minute ferry to Lokrum. Fulls of birds, rabbits, turtles and more. You can easily spend a whole day here if you want to see everything. Full of nice spot...  more »
  • I was there for five hours in the rain, and really never wanted to go back. Someone told me it was good, but I found it to be Paradise. Can't imagine what it would be like on a sunny day!  more »

  • Wonderful place to visit nature at it's best. Also so much history and beauty. Well worth the trip. Just wear the correct footwear.
  • A breath taking place. But the botanical garden in this island is too poor and has almost nothing interesting
  • Lokrum is a very pretty place to walk and enjoy nature. The peacocks just wondering around make it even better. Some of the trails are ankle killers so make sure to wear good hiking shoes or stick to the easier paths.
  • A must do when you visit Dubrovnik: boat every 30 mins to get there and back, fantastic island full of peacocks. Recommend to spend some time on the small dead sea (even tough has nothing to do with the original extra-salty one) and spend some time jumping off the high cliffs!
  • Its worth taking a trip to Lokrum. See a nice view on Dubrovnik. Go see fort royal tale pictures with peacocks and enjoy a bath in the dead sea (go jump from the top as well) :)
