Island of Lokrum, Dubrovnik

#1 of 184 in Parks in Dalmatia
Swim, marvel at exotic plants, and walk with peacocks at Island of Lokrum. Visit the site where, according to legend, King Richard the Lionheart was cast safely ashore after a shipwreck during his return from the crusades. The area was also once a favorite summer retreat of Austrian archduke Maximilian. To get to the island, ride a ferry from the city. Enjoy a dip in the small salt lake, which is 10 m (33ft) deep and known as the Dead Sea. Visit the botanical garden to admire Mediterranean plants, including laurels, oaks, pines, cypresses, olives, agaves, cacti, magnolia, and palms. If you'd like to take a journey back in time, explore the deserted 11th-century Benedictine monastery. • Beautiful nature in the center of Dubrovnik. You can see many rabbits and peacock jumping and laying around. You can take a swimm in the sea or in a dead lake in the middle of the island. I love going...  more »
  • Have an amazing time at this island. Spent an hour walking round the forests trails and botanical gardens before discovering a beautiful rocky beach. Returned to the main part of the island to swim in...  more »
  • In the 17th century the island was used as a quarantine zone to prevent the spread of contagious diseases. To settle for first on the island were in 1023 the Benedictine monks who founded an Abbey was rebuilt in the 14th century and then collapsed in the earthquake of 1667. In 1859 the Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg there built a Palace and restored the cloister later a Museum of natural sciences. During the French occupation of the island the French built a fortified town called Fort Royal on the highest point at 91 m above sea level today is an overlook that offers a spectacular view of the island and the city of Dubrovnik. We decide to get to the top but the business proves formidable soon! The hike is challenging, the trail up to the Fort is very steep and rocky so we have to be very careful but once at the top our efforts are rewarded not so much by outcroppings of the Fort but the splendid sights!

  • We were very much in doubt, whether a visit to the island was worth it, due to mixed reviews. Not full stars, because it is expensive, 150 kunas for adult, which DOES include entrance to the park. We had a good day, with two kids aged 4 and 7, lots of fun. Many peacocks everywhere, wild rabbits as well. Beautiful views on the rocks. Good restaurant, where we stayed for lunch.
  • Lovely island just off of Dubrovnik. Costs 150 kuna for the boat trip and the entrance to the island (always go with the Lokrum boats!!) which is a little expensive but it's a lovely day out from the busy old town. There's plenty of wildlife (wild peacocks, rabbits and we even saw a wild tortoise!!) and there are many swimming spots, including the dead sea which is so salty you can float in it. Would recommend going on the first boat over and doing the dead sea first as a lot of people go to Lokrum for this. There's also the ruins of a monastery on the island which is good to visit, but also the views from the boat coming back into Dubrovnik are beautiful!
  • We had a great time. Not too crowded when we visited and it was pleasent walk on the island. Some patha could have been arranged bit better and signs were bit confusing sometimes. Worth a visit
  • Lokrum is an island at Adriatic sea 600 meters from city Dubrovnik, Croatia. The firs written mention of Lokrum was in 1023 when the Benedictine abbey and monastery were founded. The name Lokrum comes from the Latin "acrumen" meaning sour fruit. In 1959 a Botanical garden was founded on Lokrum which contains native and imported, tropical and subtropical plants, and other vegetation originating from Australia and South America. A restaurant is located in the former monastery and walking routes round the island is marked on.
  • I was marooned on this island by my treacherous crew. Luckily the native peacocks accepted me as one of their own. If you ever read this, Scurvy Pete, you mutinous dog, the joke is on you: this island is awesome.
