Island of Lokrum, Dubrovnik

4.5
#1 of 18 in Parks in Dubrovnik
Island Nature / Park
Swim, marvel at exotic plants, and walk with peacocks at Island of Lokrum. Visit the site where, according to legend, King Richard the Lionheart was cast safely ashore after a shipwreck during his return from the crusades. The area was also once a favorite summer retreat of Austrian archduke Maximilian. To get to the island, ride a ferry from the city. Enjoy a dip in the small salt lake, which is 10 m (33ft) deep and known as the Dead Sea. Visit the botanical garden to admire Mediterranean plants, including laurels, oaks, pines, cypresses, olives, agaves, cacti, magnolia, and palms. If you'd like to take a journey back in time, explore the deserted 11th-century Benedictine monastery. To visit Island of Lokrum on your trip to Dubrovnik, use our Dubrovnik itinerary maker.

  • Just a short 10 minute boat ride from the main dock in old town and you are transported to an island of free roaming peacocks, rabbits, and rocky beaches. Now be prepared with water shoes as the beach...  more »
  • VIsitng Lokrum as one of the highlights of our stay in Dubrovnik. The boat ride is only short, and boats depart regularly. One on Lokrum there are lots of things to see, as we visited in April it was ...  more »
  • You pay £15 each for a return journey to an island with to be honest has not a great deal to see. The beach is nice enough and there are a few cafes and restaurants in the island. The fort at the top ...  more »

  • As beautiful as Dubrovnik. Take your swimming gear and dip in the sea and natural pools. Wander the gardens and go to the towers at the top with the best view. Even fed wild pomegranate to wild rabbits!
  • Must visit if you come to dubrovnik. Less crowded than the main city. Pack swim wear (dead sea lake and well the sea), also pack shoes for great walks around.
  • The beautiful forested island near Dubrovnik for centuries belonged to the ecclesiastical order of Benedictines who had a church there. However, at the end of the 18th century, the Dubrovnik Republic faced financial difficulties and decided to sell the island in 1798. That year, the legend of Lokrum squat is born. Namely - according to the oral tradition that has been held until today - the Benedictines, angry by the decision of the sale of Lokrum, go to the rush hour on the island, wrapped in black hats with hoods on their heads, holding inverted candles, saying a horrible curse: death or severe The misfortune of each owner of Lokrum after them. This legend will serve as a good script for my future movie.
  • This is a beautiful small island that's easy to get to on a short boat ride from Dubrovnik's old port. Worth checking out whether or not you're a fan of Game of Thrones.
  • Great little island nearby Dubrownik, 15 min. with a ferry boat (round trip costs 120kn). If you get to an island in a another way as with a ferry boat, you have to pay an entry fee in amount of 90kn. On island few restaurants, bars, many places to walk and to chill on the grass, or on the rocks nearby water.

Where to stay in Dubrovnik

One of Croatia's major tourist destinations, Dubrovnik remains one of the most expensive cities in the country, especially if you wish to stay in the old town at peak season. You can choose from upscale hotel rooms just east of the old town, but for budget-friendly beds you may have to go as far as the outskirts of town. Many locals rent small rooms in their private homes, so look for rental signs in windows or check with the city's tourist office.
