Island of Lokrum, Dubrovnik

Swim, marvel at exotic plants, and walk with peacocks at Island of Lokrum. Visit the site where, according to legend, King Richard the Lionheart was cast safely ashore after a shipwreck during his return from the crusades. The area was also once a favorite summer retreat of Austrian archduke Maximilian. To get to the island, ride a ferry from the city. Enjoy a dip in the small salt lake, which is 10 m (33ft) deep and known as the Dead Sea. Visit the botanical garden to admire Mediterranean plants, including laurels, oaks, pines, cypresses, olives, agaves, cacti, magnolia, and palms. If you'd like to take a journey back in time, explore the deserted 11th-century Benedictine monastery. • Lokrum island is a small getaway from the old dubrovnik town through a boat. The USP of this island for Game of thrones fans is that it has the Iron throne in it. Otherwise for nature lovers, this place has peacocks, and a long trail to walk around. The entire island can be completed in less than 4 hours through the walking trail. There is a lake inside the island where people can relax and bath. But that can be done only in the summers though.
  • We used to build small houses or cottages when we were child. And then we used to keep our belongings, whatever important for us, like crown caps or marbles there. . Dubrovnik's beauty can't be explained with words of course. Not only the oldtown's beauty, but also the beauty of the places around. One of the most famous one, Lokrum Island for example. Similar to the small cottages that we used to build in our childhood, Lokrum is like a cottage that Dubrovnik has built. It is a place where the city is hiding it's beauties and it is like a secret place. There are so many beauties fitted into the island. I was planning to stay for few hours but on the way back, I started thinking that you can even stay there for a night
  • Definitely worth a visit when you are in Dubrovnik, although it is a little bit pricey. If you are on the island you should enjoy a walk to the fort. The walk to the fort is quite steep uphill so be prepared. You should also take plenty of water if it's hot. You can go downwards at the back of the fort and walk to the sea for an almost private little beach with a very nice view on Dubrovnik. Do note though that there are quite some see urchins over here, so be careful if you have nothing on your feet.
  • We spent around 3 hours in Lokrum and managed to see all the main sights (didn't stop for a swim or for food). Would recommend getting the first boat over as there are less people at that time. If you are a fan of Game of Thrones, there is an iron throne in the monastery which is great for taking photos and much better than the one in the souvenir shop in old town as it looks more like a throne room. The Dead Sea is a great spot for swimming but arrive early to get a good spot as it does get busy. The fort is a highlight of the island and well worth the walk up. The views from the top are amazing! Overall it was well worth visiting and I would definitely return!
  • Stunning island, it is a bit pricey to get over there but worth it. Once on the island there are times you are very secluded. Plenty of wildlife & beautiful scenery. Sensible shoes are a must as the paths aren’t great.
