Fort Lovrijenac, Dubrovnik

4.5
#3 of 22 in Historic Sites in Dubrovnik
Historic Site Tourist Spot
See the castle on a cliff, Fort Lovrijenac, one of Dubrovnik's most recognizable sights, and a detail from HBO's "Game of Thrones." Sitting 37 m (121 ft) above sea level, the fort dates back to 1018, when it was intended to protect the western part of Dubrovnik. Today, you can witness some of the events that take place at the site, which is sometimes compared with Gibraltar. Climb the 175 steps to the fort to see some of the best views of the city and the bay. Look for cannons that were designed by the leading local cannon caster of the epoch. • Another "die hard" Dubrovnik-Fort Lovrenac (or Fort of St. Lawrence, Tvrđava Lovrijenac)-trjohugolnoj forms of fortification erected on top of a huge rock (37 meters above sea level), the location receiving the sonorous "pogonjalo" Gibraltar of Dubrovnik ". Steep, overgrown with spiky bushes its slopes almost unapproachable. Lovrenac, who was a symbol of resistance to the Venetian Republic, was erected in order to protect the Western approaches to the city as far back as the 11th century, when the first phase of building additional fortifications, he subsequently constantly strengthened and reconstructed. Aborigines now called this Fort "-haired elder, and at its gates preserved ancient Latin inscription, translated differently in different sources, but the essence of which boils down to one thing: freedom cannot be sold for any treasures. Photos of the Fort are received and surprisingly well with the land, and, if possible, by the sea. Recommend!

  • Definitely worth doing after you've done the city walls especially if you are a Game of Thrones fan. About a 10 min walk from the city walls and that includes the steps up. We were ready to pay to go ...  more »
  • This fort (in English i think it is called St Lawrence fort) was a particular highlight of our trip. There is not a lot there (it's essentially an empty fort) but the views are spectacular. We stayed ...  more »

  • Amazing views from the top... a nice place the cost of the ticket is 50 HRK and plus one can see where the shooting of game of thrones was done
  • Do the city walls and the fort. There is a ticket that includes both and it's worth it. The walls go around the whole city and you walk anti-clockwise as it's a one way system. This works well and was a great experience with beautiful views.
  • A place to visit for Game of Thrones fans with many recognisable scenes having been filmed in and around the fort.
  • Awesome views croon the top! Worth the walk up the stairs and a great place to see where the game of Thrones series was filmed as well.
  • Two reasons to visit: (1) You get an amazing view of the old town (2) you will feel like into the fortress of Game of Thrones

Where to stay in Dubrovnik

One of Croatia's major tourist destinations, Dubrovnik remains one of the most expensive cities in the country, especially if you wish to stay in the old town at peak season. You can choose from upscale hotel rooms just east of the old town, but for budget-friendly beds you may have to go as far as the outskirts of town. Many locals rent small rooms in their private homes, so look for rental signs in windows or check with the city's tourist office.
