Fort Lovrijenac, Dubrovnik

4.5
See the castle on a cliff, Fort Lovrijenac, one of Dubrovnik's most recognizable sights, and a detail from HBO's "Game of Thrones." Sitting 37 m (121 ft) above sea level, the fort dates back to 1018, when it was intended to protect the western part of Dubrovnik. Today, you can witness some of the events that take place at the site, which is sometimes compared with Gibraltar. Climb the 175 steps to the fort to see some of the best views of the city and the bay. Look for cannons that were designed by the leading local cannon caster of the epoch. A visit to Fort Lovrijenac represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Dubrovnik journey website to plot your vacation.

  • I recommend taking a stroll of Dubrovnik to visit this beautiful place. The views are worth it. Only in the high season there's a lot of tourists.

  • Stunning views; save your city walls ticket. It includes entry here. It's a bit tricky to find the entrance, but it's definitely worth the climb up. They show plays here during the Dubrovnik festival....  more »

  • Great views at the top over the old town. The surrounding area just before you reach the fortress is perfect for sunset too.
  • Beautiful views of the old town from another angle. Tickets are 50HRK but free admission applies to Walls of Dubrovnik ticket holders. There is an open platform on the top of the fort overlooking the open Adriatic sea and the old town. Definitely far quieter and less crowded compared to the city walls.
  • Wayy less touristy than the city walls and has an equally beautiful view (although it's considerably smaller). Cost 50 kn. I would recommend going there first and proceeding to the rest of the city.
  • You can have great views of the city walls from there. Apart from that of you are not a fan pf got there is no.mivh entertainment there.
  • Must place to go in Dubrovnik. It's better to buy dubrovnik card perior visiting this site

Where to stay in Dubrovnik

One of Croatia's major tourist destinations, Dubrovnik remains one of the most expensive cities in the country, especially if you wish to stay in the old town at peak season. You can choose from upscale hotel rooms just east of the old town, but for budget-friendly beds you may have to go as far as the outskirts of town. Many locals rent small rooms in their private homes, so look for rental signs in windows or check with the city's tourist office.
