Monkey Park, Tamarindo

3.4
#14 of 21 in Wildlife in Tamarindo
Give something back to Costa Rican wildlife while learning more about endangered animals at Monkey Park, a refuge center for sick and injured wild animals. Monkey species, including spider monkeys, share a home with marmosets, macaws, and ocelots at this facility. What the park lacks in terms of bells and whistles, it compensates for in goodwill, putting all proceeds towards maintenance of this vital wildlife rescue center. While the park is nonprofit and pro animal welfare, the sight of creatures in enclosed cages may still upset some people. Put Monkey Park into our Tamarindo travel itinerary maker and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

This was not exactly what I was expecting. As a sanctuary for rescued animals, I expected more natural habitat - like enclosures, more of a kind of half way house between a zoo and the wild. I'm not s...  more »

We enjoyed this place very much. My 6 year old loved getting up close to the animals and trying to get the birds to talk - ha! I wish the volunteer that was working was more willing to give a tour as ...  more »

Hidden gem with spectacular animals in rehabilitation. Some were injured and nursed back to health, while others found a new home here due to previous careless owners. This is a non-profit sanctuary, so don't expect a typical zoo experience. Definitely worth a visit as you take a break from the beach. Don't forget mosquito repellent!

Stopped by randomly on the way to Avellanas and so glad we did! Was one of the highlights of our trip. Beautiful area, beautiful animals, and the staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. This is a must see for anyone in the area.

Awesome place! This animal sanctuary has a great staff that really knows their stuff! We took a group of kids from one of the local schools to a field trip here and our guide gave us a great tour of their facility and educated us on the importance of wildlife conservation and the mistakes people make when they decide to domesticate wild life animals. Also we had the opportunity to learn about growing and it's importance in the care of the environment!

Many animals but we were there on a very rainy day and it was clear that the animals didn't want to be bothered. It was good to support the park. A really cool contemporary cafe/ restaurant next door. With admission/donation to the park, you get a free drink.
