Fabrica de Carretas Eloy Alfaro, Sarchi

(4.5/5 based on 120+ reviews on the web)
The sight of brightly colored Fabrica de Carretas Eloy Alfaro immediately brings a smile to your face. See beautiful ox carts, chairs, tables, and other wooden products made with passion and skill as you wander the site. Intricate, boldly colored ornaments capture the true spirit of the Caribbean, and the friendly craftsmen will happily answer your questions about their works. The ox carts made onsite are still manufactured using traditional techniques, keeping the same look they had when people used their distinctive designs to identify one another as they crossed paths. The souvenir shop offers a variety of equally beautiful wooden artworks, but of a more convenient size to carry. Using our world travel planner, Sarchi attractions like Fabrica de Carretas Eloy Alfaro can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • The group I was with stopped here en route to Bosque de Paz. One person wanted to do some souvenir shopping for small items, which Fabrica de Carretas has, but it also has some very lovely ceramic war...  more »
  • This was not a stop I had planned on our trip, but it was well worth the visit. Short tour provided by an excellent guide. Gave us info and showed us the cart factory. It was super cool how they still...  more »
  • It is the only village in the country where you can see a little craft. This family factory presents the entire production of the famous carts, national emblems of Costa Rica. The joinery seems out of another era, and painters to decorate with minutiae wheels and armchairs. The exit store complements the visit.

  • A pretty typical gift shop/tourist trap. However, the art outside is beautiful. The art class is fun and the teacher is great. The food upstairs is good but expensive. Overall, better than most of the gift shops.
  • This store / souvenir manufacturing facility is large and very well stocked. All the wood articles are (as far as I know) certified to be made in Costa Rica. You can walk to the back of the property where some artisans are working on their products. They have a lot of choice, and their prices are ... fair. Nothing amazing, but no rip-off. Unfortunately this place has gotten enough publicity that it is now on the tour companies' radar, so there are tour buses that actually stop here (flooding the store with tourists)...
  • Amazing shop, old world artist shop in the rear, a must stop in Sarchi!
