Attended the BBQ as part of a package, the other part being an ATV adventure out of Tamarindo. I use the word “attended” rather than “visited” or “ate some” because while the food is really good, it’s the atmosphere that makes this place special. You can eat BBQ at any number of restaurants around Tamarindo...but you’re not likely to feel as welcome...as family...as with Alex at the Black Stallion. If you want great food and a genuine Pura Vida experience, this is the place for you.
I meant to write this review when we returned home from Costa Rica back to Cleveland about a year ago. Black Stallion and Alex left us with such a great memory of a wonderful evening in Costa Rica. My husband and I had read great reviews and love barbecue so figured we would try it out. Every person working and every customer here was extremely friendly. It is a very inviting atmosphere! At the end of the evening, Alex offered to drive some of the guests that were still left hanging at the restaurant up to the mountain where we had an amazing experience to say the least. My husband and myself, as well as some visitors from out west who we enjoyed the time with had a great time together. We can not thank Alex, and his staff enough for sharing his place and the experience with us. We will be next time in Costa Rica! It is especially a must with a small or large group.
On the outside Black Stallion looks like a legit establishment, but once you're in, the facility lacks professionalism one would expect as a customer. First of all, when we drove up to make arrangements to go horse back riding we didn't know where to go to find any kind of office. Once the kept dogs started barking, Alex showed up from his 2nd Floor pad and spoke to us form the balcony without bothering to come down from his tower. Once we showed up the following day, even with reservations, the local "cow boys" weren't expecting us but still accommodated me and my 5 and 7 year old. The 7 year old had her own horse while the 5 year old rode with me. Mostly a boring ride UNTIL, my saddle came loose and my son and I slid off the horse and went straight down. The tiko (local Costa Rican) tried to blame the horse but it was clearly the handlers that did a horrible job and securing the saddle on the horse. Long story short, we were super lucky and I didn't hit any rocks, which were inches away, but I did fracture my my tailbone. Alex doesn't let the tikos take the money and Alex wasn't in his tower so we didn't have to pay on the spot and were asked to come back later. We didn't. Please go to a more professional establishment and like Diamante eco Adventure or any where else. Alex, you need to fire or retrain your guys before someone is really hurt or dies! Talk to your guy in the attached image and reach out to me if it helps answer some of your questions. P.S. I've decide to never go horse back riding again.
By far the most welcoming, accommodating, and friendly group of people. Couldn't have expected a better place to spend our limited time in this beautiful country! Thanks for making our day one for the books! This experience makes it hard to imagine not coming back to Cista Rica if only just to hang with you guys. Karaoke and BBQ next time for sure!
Hands down the best zip lining in Tamarindo! Everything from the price to the guides and service was excellent. We booked it through Kacey at ATV Tamarindo and had a blast. Next time we will definitely check out the BBQ.
