Parque La Sabana, San Jose

4.1
#1 of 12 in Parks in San Jose
Explore the area that Costa Ricans call 'the lungs of San Jose' during a visit to Parque La Sabana, a large metropolitan park. The 72 ha (177 acre) park is known as the home of the country's national soccer stadium, as well as many other sports facilities, including running and skating tracks, and soccer fields. Formerly the site of the country's main airport, the terminal building still stands, although it has now been converted into the national art gallery. Take a stroll around the artificial lake and through the wooded areas, spotting native plant life and birds. Our San Jose trip itinerary builder makes visiting Parque La Sabana and other San Jose attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

Few people know that the Park of La Sabana was the international airport of the country and the city until the year 1961. By building the new airport in Alajuela work began on remodeling and transformation. The control tower and arrival and departure halls were turned into what is now the Museum of modern art. The hangars were demolished and the free spaces are today the National Stadium were ripiantumati and supplanted by skating rinks, a running track, pedestrian walkways, a pond took place. Today is Sunday activity center of the capital. Great restoration work but is not a tourist attraction.

I loved the diversity of this park. You can find a museum on one side, a skating rink on another, and soccer fields everywhere. Such a nice place and felt very safe.  more »

Nice park. Plenty of space to stretch your legs and there is the national stadium there for soccer games and concerts.

It is a very beautiful big park where events tend be held with some restaurants surroundig the area. The park usually gets filled with people during the weekend and is good for a bit of sport, picnic and some exercise. They allow animals in the park, just make sure to take a baggy to pick up the animals droppings in case policemen see you leaving it there. The park can be a bit dangerous due to thieves but just watch your belongings and there police that do roam the park and even more so on the weekends. During a nice day it is recommended to go to this park and enjoy yourself.

Love this park! So much energy of people and kids here. Lots of space to walk, ride bikes, skate, fish, boat, etc. You can find street vendors selling snacks like mangoes and ice cream. You can also fly kites here. Lots of people come here on vacation days.
