Categories: Sacred & Religious Sites, Tourist Spots
Marvel at Metropolitan Church (Catedral Metropolitana), an elaborately designed historical church, sitting in the heart of San Jose and east of Parque Central. It was built in 1871 after the pre-existing church was destroyed in an earthquake. The façade features a grand renaissance style towering over the park plaza with tall columns. The inside exhibits a neoclassical interior with colorful Spanish-tile floors, stained-glass windows, and at the main altar stands 17th century Guatemalan statues of cherubs and of Christ. After exploring the church have a stroll or a picnic in the park opposite. To visit Metropolitan Church (Catedral Metropolitana) on your trip to San Jose, use our San Jose itinerary maker.
