  • We had an amazing trip. The guides patiently taught us how to ride the Segway and we went to an off the beaten path part of quepos. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Costa Rica. My 15 and 17 year old daughters loved the trip. The guides went out of their way for us and when daughter left her sunglasses behind they came and delivered them to us. We enjoyed fresh coconut milk cut off from the tree.
  • Recently my family was traveling in Costa Rica and we decided to book a tour with Segway Tours Costa Rica while we were in Quepos. I've taken a number of Segway tours in differing places, and I encouraged my family on this trip, as I've always had a good (and safe!) time. Unfortunately on this specific trip, my elderly mother had a really terrible fall off of the Segway, while we were learning to ride them. At this point, we had not yet left for the tour and were only in the practice area where you learn to get on and off the Segway, and drive around some small cones to make sure you can navigate appropriately. As best I can tell, she may have clipped a planter that was next to the walkway and she went flying head-first over the Segway. She landed on her head and the side of her body, and frankly we thought she broke her arm. After much deliberation in our family, we decided against continuing with the tour. My mother was simply too injured to continue on, and we didn't feel confident that she would be able to complete the tour successfully. Luis, our guide, was absolutely fantastic through this entire process. When my mother fell, he was the first one to her side to assist her, he got ice for her leg and arm, and as we deliberated on whether to continue on the trip, he was extremely gracious in allowing us the time to figure out the best decision for our group. Luis is the reason that I'm including two stars on this review (he, personally, actually deserved 5 stars). The primary issue occurred however when we returned home and contacted the business manager, Jeff, about a partial refund - since we were unable to even start the tour. When we talked with our guide Luis before leaving, he stated he thought this would be possible, and he gave us Jeff's contact information. Jeff's email response however was curt, he quoted policy to us, and said that there would be no refund issued. Having worked in differing areas of the service industry I understand about policy and I understand that our situation was unique in that we arrived for the tour, but were unable to start the tour due to an injury. That being said, I cannot imaging owning a business and receiving word from a customer that a serious injury occurred, and quoting policy back at the customer (and no inquiry about the condition of the injured family member, etc.). On top of that, since we were misinformed by our guide that at least a partial refund would be possible, that alone should merit an exception to policy (and that misinformation is not our guide's fault either - that's an issue of poor management and training from the company). Long-story-short, after this experience, I just don't think I can recommend this company to anyone. I've never had an issue on a Segway previously and I firmly believe they are 99% safe, but when you have someone fly off on a Segway and land on their head, I cannot imagine quoting policy and stating, "sorry - no refunds". Very discouraging and frankly poor business practice. Shame on Jeff and this company. Please do take this experience into consideration when you look at booking with this company.
