  • Entry, it is an unforgettable experience. The more particular form of feel the mountains and their climates. Cerro Chirripó is only the rise to the top, there are 14 previous kilometers and each with its own profile. I recommend to prepare, at least 3 to 4 months of preparation, the idea is to enjoy the landscape, see the Sunrise, feel the height, but does not fail in the attempt. Pleasant and friendly walk, beginners care, care, nor is it a game.

  • I am backing the review of sam m. and his account of what happened. The man in charge of hostel essentially sent a young man back into a possible life threatening situation with absoulutly no concern ...  more »

  • Best National Park in Costa Rica! Has the highest peaks, great landscape, awesome views and very challenging hikes. The place is for advanced hikers though, getting to the refuge is a 15KM uphill walk. From there you can do other 6 trails. So you must be ready to do a great exercise. Come prepared, be sure to read articles on internet with tips and recommendations for this advanced hike.
  • Beautiful trail system! Well marked. Be sure to get a permit online well in advance. Climbing Cerro Chirripó is such a gorgeous hike! We began at 3 AM Hotel Uran and with a one day permit only (due to late booking and unavailability) we hiked all the way to the summit in 12 hours. Complete round trip with stops took us 21 hours. We arrived back at our hotel at midnight. 40km (~25 miles) & 7,546 ft elevation gain... WHAT A CRAZY DAY. But I would do it all over again. This is one of the most beautiful trails I've ever been on. Be sure to bring a lot of food and water! The trail can be very muddy, bring poles and grippy shoes!
  • A fantastic experience to climb up Mount Chirripo, or even make it up to the first shelter (~4km, offers snacks). You need to reserve space online weeks in advance and check in with the ranger station before. Absolutely worth the bureaucratic hassle to climb up to the peak (see James Kaiser's website), but do not try without booking the base camp. It took us 8 hours to get to the base camp and 12 the next day to get to the peak and all the way back down. Also make sure you have a warm down sleeping bag. In base camp, indoor temperatures drop close to freezing point at night.
  • Beautiful mountain! Unbelievable sights, blue sky and sunny early February days, and cold evenings! You got to go there, it totally worth the ticket!
  • The national park itself is very simple. A shelter some warm food and tons of green areas. I think it is a good experience for hikers who enjoys a simple journey. there are some commodities such a hot meals, hot drinks, luggage transportation. At this time the shelter does not provide hot water for the shower, but IMHO it's part of the journey. Even though it can be done in one or two days I'd recommend to go for 3 days at least a less exhausting trip.
