  • This UNESCO World Patrimony site is hard to find - Google sent us to an address in “downtown” Palmar del Norte which is entirely wrong. Maybe that is why it is so little known. A taxi driver directed ...  more »
  • Let me start by saying that I am passionate about archaeology and in Costa Rica for me this site (along with Guayabo and the great museums of the capital) constituted a rare chance to study this specific interest. Having already read on the web some insight into stone spheres on modern small museum did not add much to what I already knew (and very little is known about the subject). Apart from the few items on display (bar, patently rejects of the great museums of San José) and some ' small ' sphere, it was interesting to know that 5 of the balls in the park adjacent to the Museum were among the few still in the original place. Were then subject to small archaeological excavations that had highlighted some aspect of their use, among other things as a sign of power at the entrance of the houses of chiefs. I expected so to find such excavations protected by canopies (a modest expense compared to the modern and elegant Museum building). Actually visiting the Park I found that everything had been dug underground again and the aforementioned spheres emerged with the top few cm from the ground. A meager reward for a hike in a suffocating heat in the middle of a bad secondary jungle which replaced the banana plantations in 30 years since their abandonment. In a clearing of the jungle are crammed a dozen balls from different sources. Here if only we had the pleasure of observing the trees around three specimens of saimiri (squirrel monkey), a rare species of monkey is threatened with extinction.

  • We have been to Costa Rica many times and has never heard about the stone spheres. The visitors center provides informative videos and displays. We ventured out on the grounds to see these pre-Columbi...  more »

  • This is a very interesting place for those into serious archaeology, but as others have said, the spheres aren't very dramatic and the site while well provided for in some respects (good "banos", good explanations and a few (very few) other interesting artefacts) lacks drinking water (so bring some as it's usually very hot here!) . Note that many guides fail to locate it correctly. To find it, take Route 2 (Interamericana) to Palmar Norte, cross the long girder bridge over the Rio Terraba, and then turn right on to the Sierpe Road. Note that it's worth making a stop at the little park that comes up on the left, opposite the airport and the plinthed FC del Sur steam engine (worth a look in its own right). The park has several large spheres as well as beautiful and interesting trees. The museum is 8 km down the road towards Sierpe. There are helpful markers showing the number of km to go; a white M on a blue square background. The final sign has an arrow pointing to the museum. I have tried to correct the museum location; there are two markers and one of them is misplaced to be at Palmar Norte. The other is correctly located on the Sierpe road.
  • It is good to stop in if you're near palmar Norte, but I wouldn't make a special trip for it...it's a different experience for the Costa Rica usual.
  • A bit underwhelming. There is not much info presented as to the meaning and function of the spheres, which are the focus of this museum. More high tech research is needed.
  • This was a very magical experience and we documented for our doc under an episode called GUÍAS (Guides). Despite the scalding day and a very humid weather we managed to visit the Sitio Museu finca 6 and walk thru a series of trails until we got to see the famous ancient stone spheres left by an ancient local civilization.
  • this archeological site contains ancient stone spheres made by the original natives of this land. There are stone spheres both found there on site and also relocated back from stately houses and office buidings in San Jose, where they had been taken to during the 20th century. A brand new museum on site , property of Museo Nacional de Costa Rica provides graphic displays and videos about the spheres, and the site in general. There is a paved road all the way to the entrance of the site, located in an old abandoned banana plantation. No food for sale on site, but once you explore there, you can continue a bit further down the road to the very nice town of Sierpe, next to the river with the same name, where there are many options.
