The Diria National Park, until 2004 the Diria National Forest Wildlife Refuge, is a National Park of Costa Rica south of Santa Cruz in the Guanacaste Province, and forms part of the Tempisque Conservation Area. It protects both dry and at higher elevations humid tropical forest in the central highlands of the Nicoya Peninsula, including the watersheds of the Diria, Tigre, Verde and Enmedio rivers which have been created a terrain of deep valleys with steep slopes. The 12,000-acre (5,500-ha) park has a ranger station which is open daily from 8am to 4pm for visitors and tourists, and contains species such as deer, howler monkeys, anteaters and peccary, besides 134 known species of birds. There are several rare tree species, as well as endemic plant species, including the Pitcairnia bromeliad and a type of Stenocereus cactus, which are only found on the Nicoya Peninsula. It was originally designated as a protected zone in 1991 and then two years later it became a National wildlife refuge.

  • I could login to the protected area of the park but not the facilities since access was impossible by the winter. But as he was already in place could take advantage of the waterfalls that are on the route (waterfalls), I think that probably only in winter they look so majestic, I was also lucky to see howler monkeys (monkeys), morpho butterflies, birds (trogon). The best thing is to take the open car windows to listen to the sounds of the animals or the waterfalls, but you can hardly see them since they are sometimes not obvious. It is 12 km from Santa Cruz and ideally in 4 X 4 vehicle, there are a couple of streams in winter which may disappear in the summer but always at the end is the river prior to the main facilities. The street is in ballast but it is certainly a different place that you must visit in Guanacaste, is totally different! Especially in winter. Don't forget to call before to not waste your time, especially if you plan to go during these two months (nov / Dec 2017).

  • Diria National Park is tough to get to - down rough roads, over water (manageable in the dry season). I'll say that this is fortunate because it creates a beautiful tourist-free wildlife refuge. We sa...  more »
