Monteverde Wildlife Refuge, Monteverde
(3.6/5 based on 130+ reviews on the web)
Explore some of Costa Rica's most pristine cloud forest at Monteverde Wildlife Refuge. Birdwatchers head here to catch sight of plentiful exotic avian species including quetzal, bellbirds, and toucans. Other species such as olingos, raccoons, armadillos, and sloths also inhabit the area. At an elevation of 4,724 ft (1,440 m) above sea level, oxygen is more sparse; avoid overexertion and bring plenty of water. Buy a poncho from the gift shop to protect from the wetness of the forest. • A night tour is the best way to see wildlife in the Monteverde area. We have taken this tour twice now and found it to be excellent. The area covered is small, but there are a lot of animals roaming a...  more »
